Adrenaline Addicts invites you to join this tour and experience the breathtaking diversity of Colombia's north. You will enjoy a trip along the northern coast of Colombia on Honda XR150 (upgrades available). Jungles, deserts, beaches, and mountains will be the sights of this tour. So, don't hesitate to join Adrenaline Addicts and let Colombia's north excite you!
Your accommodation will be in two-person twin share rooms at high-end hostels or boutique hotels.
You will meet at the office at 8 a.m. to finalize the paperwork, get everyone set up on their motorcycles, and get fitted for safety equipment. You will then set off for your first day down the coast.
Day 1 consists of two separate off-road rides with a nice stretch of highway in between the two. The first section will be a gravel track as we head to an ancient indigenous rock covered in hieroglyphics.
The second off-road section consists of a 3-hour offroad loop up into the Sierra Nevada mountains. The loop takes you up 1,200 meters above sea level and will test your off-road ability with sandy patches, grassy plains, rocky climbs, river crossings, and more.
You get to your hostel, El Rio, a bit early today and trade in your bikes for some inflatable tubes and a cooler full of beer. Here you go for a short hike up the river for a 1-2 hour float back down, sipping beers along the way.
You will wake up and take a quick dip in the river before jumping on the bikes and starting our ride up to the desert. You will make a stop at a flamingo sanctuary where you will hop in a wooden boat and take a tour around the small town of Camarones.
You will grab some lunch on the beach before your last stretch of riding to Manaure. You will take a tour from a local guide around the salt flats before turning in for the night.
You will take off after breakfast to start your journey further north. Now you are really riding through the desert. On this stretch, you will enjoy an endless amount of desert roads zigzagging to your destination for the night, Cabo de la Vela. You will pull up some chairs next to the ocean as you watch the kite surfers flying over you as the sun sets on the horizon.
Get ready for a big day of riding as you rise early and get on your bikes to cross the sand-covered roads to the northernmost tip of South America. Rarely visited by the average traveler, and certainly not on motorcycles, Punta Gallinas is considered to be one of the most exotic destinations in Colombia. From the rolling sand dunes and turquoise water to the sacred indigenous cultures.
There are plenty of local attractions to keep you busy for the day. The riding today is epic. Flat out over hard, sandy plains, ducking in and out between cactus fields and rocky mountain climbs are the order of the day.
You will wake up today and say adios to the northern tip as you start venturing back down south to Riohacha. But first, you will visit Playa Taroa, a remote beach where massive sand dunes dramatically drop off into the sea. Here you can slide straight down the dunes plunging into the refreshing water.
You leisurely make your way back along the coast, stopping in at Dibulla, a traditional Colombian fishing village. After a quick stop, you will finish the short ride to Cayena Beach Villa. A 10-room resort right on the beach; hands down the best hotel on the coast. Beach front property, private pool, and some of the best food on the coast. Decide how you want to spend the day: whether it be sunbathing on the beach, surfing in the beautiful Caribbean Ocean, or getting a massage poolside.
After a lazy morning on the beach or by the pool, you will hop back on your bikes and head into the jungle. After a couple hours of riding, you will arrive at an organic cacao farm where you will do a tour of the grounds and even make your own chocolate.
After the tour you will head over to Caoba Wildlife Reserve which is filled with Amazonian plants and animals. You have a short off road ride here to get to your homestay for the night, Hotel Beyonda. If you are still itching for a bit more of a ride, the owners of Beyonda have made a dirt bike track around their property that you can ride until it is time to wash up and jump in the pool.
You will set off for your second day up into the mountains. Today is an enduro riding feast, with around 5 hours of off-road tracks heading up into the mountains of Minca. You will make a stop way up in the mountains for a lunch break at the world-famous Colombian barbeque joint, Camaritas.
After a day of exploring waterfalls, hidden single tracks, and breathtaking mountain views, you will retire to your peaceful home in the jungle, Casas Viejas, perched 1,000 meters above sea level. Award-winning beers on tap, you’ll want a few.
On your last day, you will make sure to really make the most of it. Getting out of bed at 4 a.m. is always a challenge, but the night ride and sunrise 3,000 meters up in the mountains are definitely worth it. You watch the sun come up over the snowy mountains at Cerro Kennedy, the highest accessible point in the Sierra Nevada mountain range (the highest coastal mountain range in the world).
After the sun is up, you head back down to Casas Viejas for a well-earned big breakfast, then normally a couple of hour nap, before cruising back down the mountain. You will finish off with the last hour back into Santa Marta where you will have some well-deserved cold beers waiting for you.
Sam is one of the founding members of Adrenaline Addicts. In 2014, he and Christian, the other founding member, departed on a round-the-world trip, intending to cross six continents in five years. He spent the first nine months of the trip on the north coast of Colombia, bought a motorbike and traveled as far south as Peru, then returned to the north with Christian, where they founded the company. Prior to starting Adrenaline Addicts, Sam worked as a motorcycle instructor in the United States for several years before combining that passion with his love of Colombia.
Christian is the second founding member of Adrenaline Addicts. He traveled extensively throughout Colombia in 2014 and 2015 both together with Sam, and by himself, he worked for several adventure tour companies along the way before teaming back up with Sam in early 2016 to start the company. Prior to Adrenaline Addicts, Christian rode extensively around off-road and motocross trails throughout the United States, giving him a completely different riding background and skill set to his original business partner, complementing each other perfectly.
Brayden is the third business partner of Adrenaline Addicts. In 2015, he traveled and worked as a volunteer in Peru and Ecuador, and he discovered a love for Latin America. He made plans to visit Colombia and started his own business. Brayden met Sam and Christian in late 2016, six months after the other two had begun operations. After he worked together for several months with Sam and Christian, the three made the decision to bring on Brayden as the third partner. Prior to joining Adrenaline Addicts, Brayden has ridden for almost 10 years in Australia, parts of Asia, and South America.
This tour will take place in Caribbean region of Colombia including Santa Marta, Buritaca, Riohacha, Cabo de la Vela, Punta Gallinas, and Minca.
The food served will be a mixture of local, Colombian fare from roadside eateries that Adrenaline Addicts knows and trusts (usually lunch), and a mix of international cuisine at the hotels and hostels you stay. Vegetarian options are available at all meals, but in some of the more remote areas i.e. Cabo de la Vela, options may be limited.
Additional desert riding available for those who dare. In the desert you also have the option of adding an extra day to visit Nazareth on Day 4 of the tour, which is a small town situated inside the lush-green desert oasis of Macuira National Park. The terrain arriving here can be tough and technical, with a lot of riding through soft sand, but the visit to this incredibly unique part of the world is worth it for those adventurous enough to take on the challenge.
