During this tour, you will stay in either a private or a shared room at local home stays or in standard hotels.

Day 1: Hanoi to Bac Yen (220 kilometers / 137 miles)

You will experience a difficult but exciting start from ADV Motorcycle Tours office to be out of the chaos of Hanoi traffic and head to the Road 32 to discover the Northwest mountainous region. You will ride along the Red River through zigzag roads with many sharp turns and gradients of up to 15%.

This distance provides a really nice view of tea plantations and daily life of the farmers on the beautiful terraced rice fields. In the afternoon, you will take your first off-road ride through a H’mong Village at the top of mountain with slippery slopes before down to Bac Yen town in the late afternoon. You will experience a total of 40 kilometers of dirt roads.

Day 2: Bac Yen to Tu Le (180 kilometers / 112 miles)

You will get up early to ride up top of the Ta Sua Peak Mountain to gaze the stunning beauty of the sunrise as the sun slowly rises out of the sea of clouds on the mountain halfway.

You will enjoy a cup of coffee before passing through the rocky slope with one side of deep valley and cliff on the other side to reach the next town famous for its endless fields where you will enjoy a delicious lunch and then you will head to Tu Le terraced rice fields. You will experience a total of 35 kilometers of dirt roads.

After a hard day ride you will enjoy some rest by soaking in the hot water running directly from the spring with the locals. Soaking together in the river is a typical cultural characteristic of Black Thai people in the North West and in the North Center of Vietnam.

Day 3: Tu Le to Thac Ba Lake (200 kilometers / 125 miles)

On this day, you will ride on more than 40 kilometers of off-road trails along the river. The road will take you through ancient Cinnamon Forest and its villages with full of cinnamon bark dried along the street. From there, you will enjoy a short ride to the edge of the Big Lake, also formed by the construction of hydroelectricity dam in the 1970's. You may enjoy some time on board a boat or join a cooking class with your very friendly host.

Day 4: Thac Ba Lake to Hanoi (160 kilometers / 100 miles)

After breakfast, you will take a boat trip to visit the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery around the lake and then come back to the home-stay to start the ride to southeast on Highway 2 and then branch off to the peaceful town of Phu Tho. You will follow the edge of the Red River along the dike almost to the point where it merges with the Black River and then flow together to reach the ocean.

By that moment, you will be very much in the lowlands of the Red River delta and the north main agricultural area. You will cross the Black River via the bridge, pass through Son Tay, and then return to Hanoi via highway.

Driving guidelines

In some areas of Vietnam, Vietnamese people join traffic with no rules. They can participate in traffic right after drinking beer and wine, use horn loudly to surpass, pass on the right, turn left or right with no turn signals, or ride into the other vehicle lanes.

It is hence recommended to stay safe when riding motorbikes in Vietnam and in addition to learning the basic regulations of the law on road traffic, you also have to know about the traffic habits of Vietnamese people. Please be mindful of keeping right from the traffic, and monitoring the speed at allowed limits of 40 kilometers per hour in towns and 60 kilometers per hour outside of towns.

It is recommended to use the horn and flash headlights when your view is limited at the corners. Also, use turn signals and also turn your head to look back when you want to change the lane or directions.

Be careful when you want to surpass because many people cross the street, change the lane, or direction without any signal, likewise when you ride in the tracks or cross the forests, please be over cautious. Please remember, many local people and their animals have a habit of crossing the road freely and hence caution needs to be exercised at all times.
