Location

COLORADO DESTINATIONS

Paonia (elevation: 5,682 feet)

Paonia is a unique town, which was originally settled by farmers, ranchers, and miners. Today, the town is now home to artists and outdoor lovers as well. It consistently ranks as one of the “coolest” Colorado mountain towns.

Paonia is naturally air conditioned by warm air flowing up the valley at night and cool air from the mountains during the day resulting in optimal conditions for growing cherries, apricots, grapes, peaches, plums, pears, nectarines, and apples.

Paonia is a real hotbed of organic farming, sustain-ably raised meats, value added products, organic hops, and a truly remarkable wine industry. You will eat some of the highest quality, cleanest food in the world when you visit this valley.

Paonia is a focal point of back roads and trails leading into the forest. Few places offer such a wonderful combination of climate, scenery, lifestyle, and recreation.

Silverton (elevation: 9,218 feet)

Visiting Silverton is like stepping back in time. Once a frontier mining town teeming with saloons, Silverton, is now a tamed-down version of the same two-street town. Most of the streets are dirt. Silverton is located in the San Juan mountains of Colorado.

Like many of Colorado’s mountain towns, Silverton began as a mining town, and found a second life as a recreation hub rich in heritage tourism. Unlike many of its fellow mountain towns, Silverton has not been polished and manicured into a destination for the well heeled.

You won’t find upscale here. Instead, Silverton retains the wild, wooly, and independent energy of a remote mountain town. The fact that the rough-and-tumble spirit has not been scrubbed away makes Silverton all the more charming, authentic, and adventurous. It’s not easy to get to, and can even feel like a step back in time. A trip to Silverton is a guaranteed adventure. The World’s Highest Harley Davidson Store is located in Silverton.

Buena Vista (elevation: 7,965 feet)

Buena Vista, Colorado is situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. The mountain town boasts of stunning views and thrilling outdoor adventure. The Sawatch Mountain Range contains some of Colorado’s highest peaks and provides magnificent views that inspire anyone who sees them. Many of these peaks are named after universities, such as Mount Princeton, Mount Harvard, and Mount Yale, earning the title “Collegiate Peaks”.

Flowing through Buena Vista is the Arkansas River, Colorado’s number one rafted river. Surrounding the Arkansas River is Browns Canyon with its beautiful granite walls that tower over the river. The Browns Canyon National Monument is 21,586 acres of unspoiled canyons, rivers, and back country forest in and around Buena Vista.

Buena Vista’s mountains, river, and wilderness area make this town a perfect playground for a range of outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hunting, horseback riding, and a host of other adventures. Buena Vista is known for the Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway and the stunning 360 views from the road.

Lake City (elevation: 8,661 feet)

Lake City is located in Hindales County, Colorado and is the only town in the county. Hinsdale County is made up of 96 percent public lands. That means they have the fewest miles of roads per person, plus the most land area located far from roads, making Hinsdale County the most remote county in the lower 48. Lake City is an outdoor person’s paradise due to hundreds of miles of hiking and off-road trails. Lake City is connected by the Silver Thread Scenic Byway.

Lake City is a designated National Historic District since 1978, boasting over 200 historic structures and reconstructed over 500 feet of original boardwalks in the historic downtown. Lake San Cristobal is the second largest natural lake in the state, and will be a motorcycle tour stop with April. The lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Colorado.
