You will have an early morning meet-and-greet at your accommodation in Chiang Mai. You will be provided with the tour briefing, riding gear, and bike, informed briefly of local history, geography, and given any personal requirements. Lastly, you will have a general question-and-answer opportunity for any concerns you might have related to the tour.

Day 1: Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon - Mae Sariang (275 kilometers)

Familiarize yourself with your bike on the highway ride heading south of Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon National Park, the highest peak in Thailand, 2,565 meters above sea level. Ride along the excellent winding mountain road through pine forest scenery. Visit Thailand’s finest waterfall, nature trails, Royal pagodas, and botanical gardens. Descend to Mae Chaem for a relaxing lunch at the local restaurant.

After lunch, ride on passing through pine forests until you reach Mae Sariang where you'll later enjoy your peaceful accommodation.

Day 2: Mae Sariang - Mae Hong Son - Pai (273 kilometers)

After breakfast, leave Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son on narrow twisty curvy roads. In Khun Yuam, you will take a break and visit a World War II museum and Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, the first temple of Mae Hong Son on the hilltop. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Visit Lod cave which means “cave with a stream running through,” on a bamboo raft.

Then, you'll be back on twisty curvy roads to Pai. You'll have an optional visit to Tha Pai hot spring where you can enjoy a mineral bath. Then you will reach a charming accommodation with swimming pool.

Day 3: Pai - Tha Ton (237 kilometers)

Before breakfast early in the morning, you will have a chance to offer food to the monks along the streets of Pai's local market. After breakfast, visit the Pai World War II Memorial Bridge. Then, you'll be back on winding mountainous roads to reach Chiang Dao where you will have a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, visit Chiang Dao cave.

You'll then ride along fantastic mountain roads via Doi Angkhang until you reach Tha Ton where you will visit the Wat Tha Ton on top of the mountain and enjoy the amazing sunset. Later, you will relax in your charming accommodation with a fantastic panoramic view.

Day 4: Tha Ton - Golden Triangle (140 kilometers)

After breakfast, you will leave Tha Ton to visit the long-necked Karen tribe village near the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Ride to Doi Mae Salong where Chinese mountain tea farmers live and test Thailand's best tea. Then, you'll be back on curvy roads to Doi Tung Royal Villa and visit the Winter Palace and the botanical garden. Lunch is served at the Royal’s Project restaurant.

You'll continue along winding roads to Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand, and visit Wat Tham Pla where you can feed some food to wild monkeys. At the Golden Triangle, you'll take a long-tail boat trip on the Mekong river for a short visit to a small village in Laos. You'll not need a visa. Visit the Opium museum before relaxing at your peaceful accommodation.

Day 5: Golden Triangle - Phayao - Chiang (311 kilometers)

After breakfast, ride along a scenic farming areas road to Chiang Rai City. After that, visit the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) one of the top 10 wonder temples in the world. Continue on a long highway ride until you reach Phayao, visit Phayao lake, Kwan Phayao, one of the largest lakes in Northern Thailand. Lunch is served at a local restaurant in front of the lake. Continue riding on windy mountain roads to Than Tong waterfall and Mae Kachan hot spring. Visit a local market, stopping for refreshment, before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Rules on the road

You will drive on the left as in England and Australia. All speed limits are in kilometers per hour, 30 to 50 for towns, 60 for suburbs and 90 for major (A) roads and dual carriageways. You will happily cruise along the open road at a good clip, but you must always slow right down through the towns and villages, 50 kilometers per hour maximum. There are often kids, dogs, chickens, yak, etc., kicking around in the streets.

Also, if you see your guide braking, there’s a good reason - and you should brake, too! Many Thais ignore the typical unwritten rules of road positioning and merging you are used to in the west. You will go over this in person so don’t worry. There is always a “sweeper” and a service vehicle to make sure any riders caught by a traffic light or water buffalo crossing delay do not get separated from the group!

  • Drop by Doi Mae Salong and taste Thailand's best tea
  • Enjoy Thailand’s finest waterfall, nature trails, royal pagodas and botanical gardens
  • Explore a World War II museum and Chiang Dao cave
  • Sail the Lod cave which means “cave with a stream running through,” on a bamboo raft
  • See the long-neck Karen tribe village
  • See the Pai World War II Memorial Bridge
  • Stop by the Wat Tha Ton on top of the mountain
  • Take a trip to Phayao lake, Kwan Phayao, one of the largest lakes in Northern Thailand
  • Tour the Opium museum and the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), one of the top ten wonder temples in the world
  • Visit the Winter Palace and the botanical garden
  • Visit Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, the first temple of Mae Hong Son on the hilltop
  • Visit Wat Tham Pla where you can feed some food to wild monkeys

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flights to arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Transfer from and to this airport is included in the price. Big Bike Tours will pick you up at the airport. Most customers touring with Big Bike Tours usually come from Bangkok and in this case, they recommend traveling up to Chiang Mai by one of the many flights operating on this route. It is not expensive and with companies such as Air Asia. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flight.

Arrival by train

The train (night train) is another option; however, the Thai train network needs a serious overhaul. Take a look at the difference between the train cost and the flight costs compared to one-hour flying time or a 12-hour train journey along with the fact that the trains are notoriously unreliable. The train option is usually the odd one out.

Arrival by bus

A lot of busses start every hour from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit - Chatuchak) to Chiang Mai. Travel time with the bus will be around eight hours.
