While in Sukhothai, you will be accommodated in a charming guest house with swimming pool. And when you're in Khao Kho, you will enjoy the pleasant weather and relax in your peaceful accommodation.

This amazing motorcycle road takes you through fabulous mountain scenery to Nan. Ride along the unique panorama of the border between Laos and Thailand. Cross the Sirikit dam reservoir on a wooden ferry and visit the World Heritage Historical Park of Sukhothai. Visit the mountainous scenery of the unseen Khao Kho (Thailand's “Little Switzerland”) and Phrae. You will have unique sightseeing, mostly unseen in Northern Thailand.

Early morning meet and greet at your accommodation in Chiang Mai. Big Bike Tours will provide the tour briefing, and then provide you with your riding gear and bike. They will inform you briefly of local history, geography, and acknowledge any personal requirements. Lastly, there will be a general question and answer opportunity for any concerns you might have related to the tour.

Day 1 - Chiang Mai to Phayao to Nan (398 kilometers)

Familiarize yourself with the bike while heading north of Chiang Mai. You will ride on a windy mountain road to Than Tong waterfall and Mae Kachan hot spring. Continue on true bikers paradise roads until you reach Phayao. Overview from the top of the hill Phayao lake (Kwan Phayao) one of the largest lakes in Northern Thailand. Lunch is served at a local restaurant.

Ride the exhilarating, mountainous highway No. 1148 to Nan, ranked in the Top 10 as one of the most fun biking roads to be found anywhere in the world. 120 kilometers of up and down curves through the impressive mountains providing you with pure riding pleasure. Visit Wat Phra That Khao Noi (Nan hilltop scenic temple) before relaxing in your lovely accommodation and jump in the swimming pool.

Day 2 - Nan to Sukhothai (345 kilometers)

After breakfast, you will leave Nan riding through winding mountainous roads. You will then take the motorbikes on a wooden ferry across the Sirikit Dam reservoir. Sirikit Dam is the largest earth dam in Thailand. It's used for irrigation, fisheries, flood control, and as well as hydro-electric power generation. Lunch is served at Sirikit Dam. Then, you will continue on the highway passing through rice fields until you reach Sukhothai.

Visit the Ancient Sukhothai Historical Park, designated world heritage site number 574 on 12 December 1991 by UNESCO and enjoy the amazing sunset in the old ruins. A magical and memorable scene. Later, you arrive at the guest house, where you enjoy the charming accommodation with swimming pool.

Day 3 - Sukhothai to Khao Kho (191 kilometers)

After breakfast, you will ride on one of the best roads to discover Thailand's “Little Switzerland”. Visit Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, “the ceramic and celadon temple” before you reach Khao Kho. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Khao Kho is a district over 1,000 meters above sea level. It is often with a misty, 360-degree panoramic view and refreshing weather the entire year (18 to 25 degrees Celsius). Later, you will enjoy and relax in your peaceful accommodation.

Day 4 - Khao Kho to Phrae (221 kilometers)

After breakfast, you will visit Khao Kho Memorial Sacrifice monument and weapons museum. Between 1965 to 1984, this mountain area was the battlefield of the Thai Communist Party and the Thai Royal Army. Then you continue uphill, cruising to Phu Ta Boek National Park: “The Shangri-La of Thailand”. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Continue along winding roads until you reach unseen Phrae, where you can relax at the beautiful accommodation with swimming pool.

Day 5 - Phrae to Chiang Mai (237 kilometers)

After breakfast, you will leave Phrae cruising along the highway to Den Chai to visit a large reclining Buddha. You will continue riding through winding mountainous roads to Lampang. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. You will also visit the Thai Elephant Conservation Center and world's first elephant hospital. You will continue riding, passing through national parks and farming areas. Visit a local market, stopping for refreshment, before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Rules on the road

You will drive on the left as in England and Australia. All speed limits are in kilometers per hour, 30 to 50 for towns, 60 for suburbs and 90 for major (A) roads and dual carriageways. You will happily cruise along the open road at a good clip, but you must always slow right down through the towns and villages, 50 kilometers per hour maximum. There are often kids, dogs, chickens, yak, etc., kicking around in the streets.

Also, if you see your guide braking, there’s a good reason - and you should brake, too! Many Thais ignore the typical unwritten rules of road positioning and merging you are used to in the west. You will go over this in person so don’t worry. There is always a “sweeper” and a service vehicle to make sure any riders caught by a traffic light or water buffalo crossing delay do not get separated from the group!

  • Enjoy Nan's hilltop scenic temple, Wat Phra That Khao Noi
  • Experience the amazing sunset in the ruins of the Ancient Sukhothai Historical Park
  • Explore Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, “the ceramic and celadon temple”
  • See the Thai Elephant Conservation Center and world's first elephant hospital
  • Take a trip to the large reclining Buddha in Den Chai
  • Visit the Khao Kho Memorial Sacrifice monument and weapons museum

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flights to arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Transfer from and to this airport is included in the price. Big Bike Tours will pick you up at the airport. Most customers touring with Big Bike Tours usually come from Bangkok and in this case, they recommend traveling up to Chiang Mai by one of the many flights operating on this route. It is not expensive and with companies such as Air Asia. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flight.

Arrival by train

The train (night train) is another option; however, the Thai train network needs a serious overhaul. Take a look at the difference between the train cost and the flight costs compared to one-hour flying time or a 12-hour train journey along with the fact that the trains are notoriously unreliable. The train option is usually the odd one out.

Arrival by bus

A lot of busses start every hour from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit - Chatuchak) to Chiang Mai. Travel time with the bus will be around eight hours.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 10% of the total price.
  • The deposit is fully refundable if the booking is cancelled before the arrival date.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
