Bike Tour Asia Thailand Motorcycle Tours Program

During this tour, you will experience daily rides across the Mae Hong Son Loop. The trip will begin and end in Chiang Mai. You will visit Doi Inthanon, which at 2,565 meters high, is Thailand's highest mountain, a village of the Long Neck Karen, a hybrid Chinese and Burmese border village on a lake named Ban Rak Thai, and the famous Pai Town.

The roads are mostly easy to ride but there are some steep and technically demanding stretches. You must be able to handle a motorcycle and do not expect to learn how to ride while on this tour. You will ride from 150 to 300 kilometers per day which will leave you ample time for relaxing, dining, and sightseeing. For this tour, you may also bring your own motorcycle and also, the support van can take a few passengers throughout the whole tour upon prior request in case you want to bring other family members or friends.

Overview

  • Terrain: mix of asphalt and off road
  • Bike: rental or personal bike
  • Mileage: 650 kilometers / 404 miles
  • Daily rides: 150 - 300 kilometers / 93 - 187 miles
  • Meals: all breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 2 dinners

Day 1: Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon, and Mae Hong Son (300 kilometers / 186 miles)

In the morning, you will have time to familiarize yourself with your motorcycle before you set off. You will start the tour from Chiang Mai and after about 50 kilometers / 31 miles, you will leave the highway and spend the rest of the day on exhilarating twisty rural roads. The first stop will be at the Vachiratharn Waterfall, an impressive and powerful 80-meter high waterfall.

You will then proceed to climb to the top of Doi Inthanon, which at 2,565 meters is the highest mountain in Thailand. After a local lunch in Mae Chaem, you will continue to the City of the “Three Mists”, also known as Mae Hong Son which is located along the banks of the Pai River and close to the border with Myanmar (formerly Burma). You will enjoy an overnight stay in Mae Hong Son.

Day 2: Mae Hong Son, Ban Rak Thai, and Pai (170 kilometers / 105 miles)

In the morning, you will take a pleasant boat ride on Pai River to visit the Karen Long Neck Village. The Karen, a tribal minority, historically lived in the hills on the Myanmar side of the border. Some of their women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. You will then set out for the famously chic town of Pai on the beginning of the road famous for having 1,864 bends of varying sharpness.

The road passes through some beautiful mountainous scenery. On the way, you will do a little side trip to the Ban Rak Thai, literally the "Thai-loving village", built around a lake on the Myanmar border. Mainly Chinese people settled there after the communist takeover of China and some of the buildings have a distinctively Chinese appearance.

In the afternoon, upon arrival in Pai, you will relax at the hotel before a dinner on delicious local or western food in a restaurant by the river. In the evening, after dinner, you will enjoy the delights of the walking street market followed by an overnight stay in Pai.

Day 3: Pai, Mae Sa, and Chiang Mai (180 kilometers / 110 miles)

A last great riding day is ahead of you in this comprehensive tour. In the morning, you will complete the remaining 762 twisties over the mountains to Mae Taeng. You will drive on rural back roads to the Mae Sa Elephant Camp and you will pay the amazing pachyderms a visit before you continue the journey. You will follow the Samoeng Loop and enjoy more twisties. In the afternoon, you will arrive back in Chiang Mai to finish this amazing tour.

Location

This motorcycle tour will take place in Thailand. The tour will start and end at Chiang Mai in the Bike Tour Asia service center. You will have the opportunity to visit Mae Hong Son, Ban Rak Thai, and Pai.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the capital of Northern Thailand and its economic, cultural, and communications hub. The city lies approximately 700 kilometers north of Bangkok in the Mae Ping river basin. Lying at an altitude of around 310 meters, Chiang Mai is surrounded by high mountain ranges including Doi Inthanon.

Chiang Mai province covers an area of some 20,107 square kilometers making it Thailand’s second largest province behind Nakhon Ratchasima. It is bordered by Myanmar to the north, Lamphun and Tak provinces to the south, Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Lamphun provinces to the east, and Mae Hong Son province to the west. The mountainous terrain is mostly comprised of jungle, parts of which lie in national parks, which are home to plenty of wildlife and exotic flora.

The mountains are also home to the many hill tribes who still retain much of their cultural identity, including the Hmong, Yao, Lahu, Lisu, Akha and Karen. Most of Chiang Mai’s mountains are oriented from north to south. Together, they create a multitude of streams and tributaries including Mae Chaem, Mae Ngat, and Mae Klang which flow into the Ping River.

Along the river basins are flat, fertile valleys, where settlement is most dense. A sprawling modern city has grown up around ancient Chiang Mai, ringed by a triangle of superhighways but if you drive in a straight line in any direction, you'll soon find yourself in the lush green countryside of Northern Thailand. A short ride will deliver you to pristine rain forest reserves, churning waterfalls, serene forest wat, bubbling hot springs, and peaceful country villages as well as adventure camps, elephant sanctuaries, and souvenir markets.
