Day 1: Chiang Mai - Thaton, 230 kilometers / 143 miles

Bike Tour Asia welcomes you to their service centre in the morning for a tour briefing and motorcycle hand over.

After only a few minutes on your scenic Thailand BMW motorcycle tour, you have left Chiang Mai behind and follow the first amazing corners of the Samoeng Loop. You will pass the Mae Sa Elephant Camp where you can stop to visit the amazing animals. From here you will make your way north through the back roads than on the main provincial road. Lunch by the limestone cliffs at Chiang Dao. You will continue following the Thai – Myanmar border.

There are a couple of scenic stops on the way. In the afternoon, you will reach Thaton, a small town on the banks of the Kok River, bordering with Myanmar. Enjoy a splendid view from Wat Thaton over the town and the vicinity. You will continue to the nearby Maekok River Village Resort, where you stay for the night.

Day 2: Thaton - Golden Triangle - Chiang Khong, 220 kilometers / 137 miles

You will leave Thaton and ascend to Doi Mae Salong on amazing twisty mountainous roads. Doi Mae Salong is a Chinese settlement which was built by a division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949.

Today, the village still offers native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers, and countless tea plantations as far as the eyes can see. You will proceed through farm villages along rice paddies and stop at the impressive Choui Fong Tea House. The tea house of this huge plantation serves all kind of different tea blends and great cakes. Enjoy the scenery!

You will continue to the legendary Golden Triangle where the three borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet. Here, you drive up to the Wat Sop Ruak temple to enjoy a great view over the Golden Triangle. In the small but interesting local Opium Museum, you can learn more about Khun Sa and the opium trade in the past. Before you reach Chiang Khong, you can stop at the View Coffee, an amazing spot overlooking the Mekong River. You will stay overnight in Chiang Khong.

  • Meals: breakfast

Day 3: Chiang Khong - Phu Chi Fah - Nan, 300 kilometers / 186 miles

You will ride through some scenic mountain landscapes with plenty of twisties up to Phu Chi Fah. Phu Chi Fa is located on the border between Thailand and Laos. It is a great ride up here - the scenery is spectacular with lots of photo opportunities. Since Phu Chi Fa is fairly remote, there are not many tourists who make it to this part of Thailand. If time permits and the weather is clear, you can ride up to the viewpoint and can walk to the cliff on the border to Laos.

You will continue to Phulangka and for the next hundred kilometers or so, you will ride through countless bends through yet more beautiful landscapes. You will rejoin the main road again and follow it to your final destination of the day which is the capital of Nan Province and is also called Nan. For centuries, Nan was a separate, autonomous kingdom with few relationships to the outside world. Now, the city is a beautiful town with many well-preserved temples.

  • Meals: breakfast

Day 4: Day Nan - Bo Kluea - Nan, 200 kilometers / 124 miles

Without any doubt, the road to Bo Kluea offers some of the best ridings in all of Thailand. You will follow Road 1169 to reach 1081 which is a classic twisting road with little traffic and which will make this day an unforgettable riding experience.

The tiny village of Bo Kluea is located in a scenic valley close to the Lao border, remote and picturesque. “Bo Kluea” means salt well as the village has raised around two natural saltwater wells which have been used for centuries.

From here, you will cross over the mountain through Phu National Park. Enjoy the stunning scenery and empty roads. Once crossed the mountains take a break at a rather unique coffee place. In the early afternoon, you are back in Nan to visit the most beautiful temple, Wat Phumin. The temple was built as if it were on the back of two immense snakes. Take the opportunity and spend the evening at an authentic local restaurant on the bank of the Nan River. You will stay overnight in Nan.

  • Meals: breakfast

Day 5: Nan - Phayao - Chiang Mai, 320 kilometers / 199 miles

After breakfast, you will drive from Nan in a western direction. During the last day of your motorcycle tour, you will cruise once again the hilly roads via Phayao to Chiang Mai. In Phayao, you can enjoy a nice lunch by the lake if you are hungry before you arrive back in Chiang Mai in the afternoon.
