The original Cambodia off-road tour truly is an itinerary that has stood the test of time like the very temples of Angkor on it. Delivering an experience that really is a journey of discovery for so many riders over the past 16 years, it still never fails to remain in the memories of riders long after they have left their adventure behind them. Gradually becoming more frequented by tourists with the advance in infrastructure and sealed roads making the long tourist bus journeys more feasible, this itinerary is still one of Cambodia Expeditions' proudest and most cultural. You'll be the envy of most Cambodians, let alone tourists, as, by the time you reach the final destination Siem Reap, home to the legendary Angkor Wat, you will have taken in their most ancient, massive, and truly stunning architectural gems hidden in the depths of this rain-forested land.
The accommodation you can expect on this tour is mid-range. Please bear in mind that Cambodia has only really had a tourism industry for 17 years and some mid-range options are rather more rudimentary than you might expect in the West.
This is a Cambodia Expeditions classic tour. The Temple Raider was inspired by the moderately famous Angelina Jolie and her role as Lara Croft. Famously, one of Cambodia’s hidden jungle temples, Tha Phrom, in Angkor City, featured in her 2001 movie, Tomb Raider, and through extensive experience in-country, Cambodia Expeditions devised a bike adventure that took in the most impressive, and less traveled temples that Cambodia has to offer. Real beauties, that were inaccessible to anyone except on foot or dirt bikes.
Arrive in Phnom Penh with tour briefing in the evening.
In the morning, visit one of the many sights Phnom Penh has to offer. Groups can be organized to visit Choeung Ek (Killing Fields) and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21). Late afternoon, assemble at the hotel for bike handover and route briefing.
There will be an early start from Phnom Penh. Leave the highway for the first 20 kilometers out of the town and ride along the edge of the Tonle Sap River avoiding the traffic and enjoy the first views of the countryside. Visit a local pagoda and get a Buddhist blessing from the monks for good luck and to ward off evil spirits while on your trip. Jump across the main highway and ride alongside the Mekong River via Silk Island.
Leave the blacktop behind for the start of the southern end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Avoid tarmac as much as possible now until the end of the trip. Ride up to Senmonorom using a lesser-known jungle trail only used by motorcycles or the most hardcore 4x4s, known locally as the King's Highway. If you make good progress, you will visit the spectacular Bou Sra Waterfall.
This morning, you tackle the infamous Death Highway riding through Lumphat and the remote village of Kon Niek. The day ends with a ferry boat crossing the Sre Pok the 'Apocalypse Now' river. The ride is tough but extremely rewarding.
If you wish, spend a half day riding out to where the locals mine the semiprecious stone Zirconium. Visit local hill tribes, check out Banlung market where you can buy hill tribe crafts and later swim in Yeak Laom, the volcanic crater lake, or just kick back at a local mountain lodge in the hills, lounge by the pool, or enjoy a massage.
Bounce off the Laos border and then go back down out of the hill tribe country and on to the provincial capital on the banks of the Mekong River. Take a sunset beer overlooking the mighty Mekong and Sekong rivers.
Go straight into the wilderness this morning and through some former Khmer Rouge villages. You're heading for the Thai border and the disputed temple of Preah Vihear that sits atop a plateau overlooking Cambodia. En route, you'll visit the biggest waterfalls in Southeast Asia that form the border with Laos.
There will be an early start into the bush for one of the best tracks to be ridden in the whole country. It is a full day's ride taking you deep into rural Cambodia, ending in the largest pyramid temple in the Angkorian group, Koh Ker.
Ride on Southeast Asia's own Route 66. Camp near the ancient and deserted ruins of the enormous temple site of Preah Khan. Bathe in a nearby reservoir. Enjoy one of the legendary Cambodia Expeditions' barbeques while watching the sunset over the sacred site.
Complete Route 66 passing the Beng Mealea temple eventually arriving in Siem Reap, the home of Angkor Wat. Have drinks around the pool.
A day free to explore the great Angkor Wat Temple. the largest religious monument on the planet. Excursions can be arranged to the great lake The Tonle Sap, the landmine museum or the war museum. Guests source their own lunch and excursions. Team can help arrange excursions requested.
Meet in the evening for the celebratory farewell dinner.
Head homeward with your head full of memories and body full of muscle memory from your ride with Cambodia Expeditions.
Theara is a great guide and mechanic, with a great grasp of English and with a great sense of humor which always goes a long way on the trails.
Husband of the Big Boss, Red is happy in his volunteer role as tour medic and guest liaisons as it means that he always gets to ride for free. He is English-speaking, with a good command of Khmer.
