In Tunisia, you will mainly sleep in tents, provided by Desert Soul Adventure. A two-person tent is given to you for the duration of the tour, so there's also enough space for the clothes and personal luggage. A couple, for instance, is offered two tents.

Every now and then, you will spend a night at a camp site. The other nights are spent out in the desert to experience a true desert crossing with no phone signal nor light pollution. You will be accommodated in twin rooms during your stay in the hotel. Shower will be available every evening (even in the desert).

Day 1: Tunis - Tozeur

Please arrive at Tunis Airport by noon on day 1 of your motorcycle tour. From there on, Desert Soul Adventures will take care of your air ticket to Tozeur where you'll be greeted by their staff and transferred to the nearby hotel where your motorbike will be already waiting for you. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 2: Tozeur - Desert (80 kilometers / 50 miles)

  • Surface: compact sand, tarmac, gravel, sandy river bed, round rocks, fast pistes, and one sand dune for a taste

On the first day on the bike, take it easy, but still leave the asphalt only a kilometer from the hotel. A nice track and cross-country riding will take you to the Star Wars set. Then you'll ride your bikes to the mountain oasis of Chebika and across a spectacular eroded riding terrain to your first desert camp. Dinner and overnight in the tents.

Day 3: Desert - Douz (200 kilometers / 124 miles)

  • Surface: compact sand, sandy tracks, rocks, gravel, maybe some tarmac

You will leave the camp in the morning and follow a relatively fast and fun desert track to the splendid landscape, marked by water erosion which is a magnificent ground for your enduro bikes. Depending on the time left till the sunset, you'll ride your motorbikes to the camp in Douz whether off-road or on tarmac. Dinner and overnight in the camp in Douz.

Day 4: Douz (rest day with dune-riding course) (20 kilometers / 12 miles)

  • Surface: tarmac and dunes

Rest day in Douz. You'll head for the center with the assistance vehicles or by motorbikes in the morning and enjoy the colors of this cheerful town.

In the afternoon, you'll take your bike to the nearby dunes and take part in a short workshop on sand- and dune-driving where you'll get some feeling for riding on different types of dunes, learn recovery techniques and get advice on how to spend your energy in the most effective way when dune-driving and recovering your motorcycle. Dinner in the town, overnight in the camp in Douz.

Day 5: Douz - Sand Sea (approximately 70 kilometers / 43 miles)

You'll leave Douz on this day and take your motorbike into the sand sea. The exact route and difficulty level will be chosen by the guide based on the proficiency level of the participants. A couple of nights will be spent deep in the desert without light pollution or cell-phone coverage. Dinner and overnight at an attractive location in the Desert Soul Mobile Camp.

Day 6: Sand Sea (20 kilometers / 12 miles)

Surface: dunes

After breakfast, your bikes will be heading south and later south-east, reaching the table mountain Tembaine in the afternoon after crossing a bit challenging sand sea. You'll be learning the importance of correctly deflated dirt bike tires today.

An alternative easier route following the support truck can be taken by whoever doesn't feel fit for the higher dunes we'll be riding on this day. When reaching the table mountain, you'll of course park the motorbikes and climb to its top on foot. You will feel the soft breeze and enjoy perfect silence with a sight of endless dunes, stretching to the east, south, and west as far as the horizon. On this day, the bivouac is planned to be in the vicinity of the mountain.

Day 7: Sand Sea - Tembaine Mountain (60 kilometers / 37 miles)

Surface: dunes

A pretty challenging day for the advanced riders: you will make an unsupported ride 30 kilometers to the south across some pretty high sand dunes to reach Ain Houdette, a lake lost in a vast sand sea. The way there and back will take a full day and the whole fuel tank, so it's going to be a true deep desert experience.

Desert beginners will have the chance to relax on this day, walk and enjoy the sand dunes, or ride (in couples!) at a safe distance around the bivouac and gain dune-riding proficiency.

Day 8: Tembaine - Ksar Ghilane (100 kilometers / 62 miles)

Surface: gravel, dunes

This half-day stage will lead you directly across the sand sea, without support, to the famous tourist oasis of Ksar Ghilane, known for its thermal pool surrounded by beer-selling bars. Spending some time in the warm water will be much welcomed after the long desert stage. Dinner and overnight at the oasis campsite.

Day 9: Ksar Ghilane

  • Surface: dunes

Rest day around the oasis pool. Desert Soul Adventures suggests a trip to the Roman Fort, playing with your motorbikes in the dunes or taking an excursion with camels or on horse back. Dinner and overnight in the oasis camp.

Day 10: Ksar Ghilane - Matmata (140 kilometers / 87 miles)

  • Surface: gravel

A completely different desert stage will be experienced on this day to reach the Berber settlement of Matmata, known for its underground troglodyte dwellings.

Desert gravel roads and open tracks, frequently crossing dry flash flood channels in the first part, will give way to impressive bare mountains surrounding you when already approaching Matmata. Farewell dinner in a local restaurant and the night will be spent in twin rooms in the hotel.

Day 11: Matmata - Djerba - Tunis

Early in the morning, you will be transferred to the Djerba airport where you'll take the morning flight to Tunis. If you have been using your own motorbike, it will be delivered to you on an agreed date in Ljubljana (or transported on your expense to any other destination of your desire). This is the end of Desert Soul Adventures' services.

Bike information

If you're bringing your own bike, please bring a hard enduro bike with a 21-inch front wheel and hard enduro or cross tires (no paddles or semi-paddles due to harsh surface on many stages), capable of developing 100 kilometer per hour of top-speed (the lighter, the better, preferably under 140 kilogram) %The advantages of a hard-enduro bike are:

  • It’s fitted with lights that are not planned to be used, because after all, it's an adventure and you never know
  • The gearing has faster ratios, on fast stages a constant speed of 80 kilometer per hour is appreciated.
  • It has a fan that is very welcome in the dunes if you lack good riding technique
  • It generally has an e-starter which you will also be very thankful for in the dunes
  • Its fuel tank is generally larger thus allowing to cover longer distances without having to carry your fuel in the backpack

Bike rental deposit

In case of motorcycle rental with Desert Soul Adventures, the bike accidental damage deposit (to be returned if no damage was caused) is 1,000 EUR credit card reservation.

A valid driver's license is required to take part in this adventure on the motorbike as you'll also be riding on public roads.

Desert Soul Adventures do not check your license, but prior to the first driving stage, you will have to sign a declaration that you possess one and that you will ride according to your experience and capabilities and entirely on your responsibility.

In case of an emergency, the insurance company might require you to present your valid driver's license.
