Join Ezy Ryder Tours for a motorbike trip through the Klein Karoo on the famous Route 62! Here, you will travel on South Africa's version of the Route 66. Take the road through Little Karoo and small town gems to Oudtshoorn for a luxury stay on a game farm while enjoying the legendary South African hospitality. Also, enjoy Western Cape mountain passes that will surely make your heart beats faster.
Accommodation will be at Montagu Country Hotel, De Bergkant Lodge, Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, and Karoo Saloon (or Karoo Art Hotel if not available).
You can enjoy a spectacular view of the majestic mountains surrounding Montagu, as well as the well-kept lush gardens of the hotel. All of Montagu’s rooms are tastefully decorated and beautiful antique furniture can be seen all over. With an on-site wellness center and spa for all your relaxation and massage therapy needs, the Montagu Country Hotel is definitely one that caters for all guests.
The ‘De Bergkant Lodge’ offers their guests luxurious accommodation and a relaxed setting. The lodge has many fine features such as beautiful sash windows, elegant doors, and high, wooden ceilings. The lodge is furnished with beautiful antiques, lovingly collected over the years. The surrounding gardens are lush and green with many shade-giving trees. The lodge has three swimming pools, a steam bath, and a sauna making it the perfect setting to relax in on a hot Karoo day.
The lodge offers unique, understated elegance accommodation in luxury tented. With the Swartberg mountains as the backdrop and a magnificent waterhole at your doorstep, it’s the closest you’ll get to the wild of the Klein Karoo and true African accommodation. The lodge also has a restaurant and spa.
The Karoo Saloon is something out of the ordinary with its live rock music events and hand painted wall murals by Marius, yet provides wholesome home cooked meals and clean ‘crashpad’ accommodation. Karoo Saloon is clean, comfortable, and almost ‘motel like’ in style.
Leaving Cape Town, you will travel the windy roads through the Boland including Helshoogte Pass and Franschhoek Pass into the Breede River Valley. Visiting the vineyards of the Breede River wine route, you will stop at Nuy Wine Farm for lunch and an optional wine tasting. You will continue onto Route 62 to Montagu where you will stay at the beautiful Art Deco Montagu Country Hotel. The remainder of the afternoon can be filled with a drive in a classic American car, a walking tour through the historic center of Montagu, or relaxing spa treatments at the hotel.
After breakfast, you will ride through Langeberg to the historical Karoo Town of Matjiesfontein where you will stop for lunch and explore the town including the transport museum and the railway museum. You will continue through the uniquely beautiful Karoo to Prince Albert at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. Your accommodation for the night is the De Bergkant Lodge where you can relax next to pool on a hot Karoo day. For those who are not afraid, there is a ghost walk through the town just before dinner. Dinner can be enjoyed at several quality restaurants in town.
This is a more leisurely day. You will leave Prince Albert and en route to Oudtshoorn, you will ride through the spectacular Meiringspoort. This is a truly unique experience, especially on a motorcycle. You will enjoy lunch at the Cango Ostrich Farm after a tour of the farm. On the tour, you will meet the super friendly ostriches, Betsie and Stoffie, stand on eggs, ‘The Ultimate Weight Test’, ride (weight limit 75 kilograms) and sit on the ostriches. The afternoon offers a range of optional activities including a visit to the Cango Caves. You can relax at the game lodge and enjoy an elephant experience. The Buffelsdrift Game Lodge also offers spa treatments if you are need of a bit of pampering. In the late afternoon, you will take a Bush Safari. After dinner, there is the option of going stargazing.
For the early birds, you can start the morning with a meerkat safari to watch these fascinating creatures go about their morning routine. You will enjoy breakfast at the lodge after which you resume your trip. No trip on Route 62 will be complete without a stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop (the oddest pub in Africa). You will enjoy lunch here after riding the magnificent Huisrivier Pass. A stop in Barrydale completes the day before you settle at the Karoo Saloon. This rock roadhouse is a motel style accommodation that offers warm hospitality, good company, and old school rock music.
After breakfast at the Karoo Saloon, you will travel over the spectacular Tradouw Pass to Swellendam. In Swellendam, you will enjoy refreshments and a walk through the historical town. You will then travel to the quaint town of Napier for lunch. Finally heading back to Cape Town, you will ride over the Houw Hoek and Sir Lowry’s Passes with a stop at the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass to enjoy the magnificent view of Table Bay and Table Mountain.
The motorcycle journey will start from some of the most scenic mountain passes in the Western Cape to Montagu. The second day will take you through the Koo Valley to Matjiesfontein, and then to the edge of the Great Karoo to Prince Albert. The third day will be an easy ride through the awe-inspiring Meiringspoort to Oudtshoorn.
The fourth day will take you to Route 62 to Barrydale and a compulsory stop at Ronnie's Sex Shop, a roadside cafe. On the last day, you will travel back to Cape Town, ride the scenic Tradouw Pass and through the Overberg stopping at some of the popular farm stalls. Before arriving in Cape Town, you will stop at the top of Sir Lowry's Pass to take in the view of False Bay and Table Mountain.
You will have 4 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 3 dinners of traditional South African cuisine and venison.
