The hillsides and wineries where Port and some of the world’s greatest wines have been produced for the last 2000 years, and the imponent city at Douro River's mouth where the wines are stored for aging in the world-famous Port Wine cellars. Considered top Romantic European destinations they are both parts of what Freeride Spirit thinks is the most beautiful wine region in the world.

Day 1

On the 1st day, you’ll explore Douro’s riverbanks, then taking a detour into the interior where you’ll find challenging but beautiful mountainous paths and typical remote villages, with picturesque houses, where time seems to stand still since a long time ago.

Portuguese are known for excellent food and meat lovers will certainly enjoy the famous, delicious, and protected Arouquesa meat. If you opt for the off-road, you’ll be unveiling the astonishing mountain range of Serra da Freita, and visiting its schist and slate villages and terraced plantations.

This area is also a Geopark habitat for several species of birds of prey. You’ll also visit granite villages and enter Medieval, Gothic worlds while discovering the 12th century (XII) patrimony. After riding some of the highest roads in Portugal you’ll later re-encounter Douro, for a remarkable Port wine tasting experience.

Day 2

Starting the 2nd day at Peso da Régua - a city that owes its origin and fame to the relevant role it had in the development of the region and in the history of Port wine – you’ll be taking the road Régua – Pinhão, considered by experts as the best road in the world, in an index that combines the types of curves and the surrounding landscape.

Arriving to Pinhão, you’ll be visiting vineyards of the noblest grape varieties in the world, enjoying unique bucolic sceneries, and exploring castles that belonged to Muslims a long time ago. Opting for the off-road alternative, you’ll discover traces of Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic civilizations, and appreciate figures dated from 22,000 to 10,000 years B.C. in the Foz Côa area. At the end of the day, you’ll have the chance to relax quietly in a hotel where serenity is the absolute keyword.

Day 3

The third day starts with the crossing of the Brava Beech Reserve, which is the first private protected area in the country, and currently also the pilot of the European project "Rewilding Europe". This project aims to protect wild horses, Iberian wolves, and a lot of other endangered species that inhabit the area. Next, you’ll be visiting strategically positioned castles that were built at almost 1000 meters of altitudes, by order of D. Afonso Henriques, the founder and first king of Portugal.

All the great viewpoints and sights along the way and the delicious traditional cuisine from Trás-os-Montes will surely delight you. Ridding along beautiful olive groves and almond tree fields that turn the road completely pink wondering anyone that passes by will also be an unforgettable experience.

Day 4

The fourth day will start amongst the astonishing plains and cliffs alongside Douro River, most particularly, discovering the dramatic beautiful curves of a section of the river that is called International Douro - as this is the natural border between Portugal and Spain.

Ridding from a great viewpoint to another, at some points, you will feel like you are leaning above the vast and stunning sights of Douro’s river valley. Then, after all this, you will still have the chance to visit some of the first river dams ever built in Portugal and to cross the river, setting foot on Spanish soil, where the Douro river is born.

Day 5

Start the fifth day by visiting outstanding Portuguese architectural heritage while leaving Douro’s high plains. As you descend towards the Douro River, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a stage that Freeride Spirit Team unanimously has elected as the most beautiful and fun to ride. Later on, you will be exploring the area near the Mouth of the river Tua, one of the Douro River’s tributaries on its right bank. And then you will be immersing yourself in history and feeling as a romantic novel’s character while getting to know some of the houses and farms of a few main and unique characters in the History of the Douro Region and its countless years of wine production.
