Enjoy nine riding days on the beautiful roads of Southern Italy and one free day in Matera! Fall in love with the colors and the fragrances of the Costiera Amalfitana, ride the Italian “coast to coast” from Campania to Puglia, get lost on the off-beaten tracks of Basilicata, return to Rome through the dramatic back-roads of the Abruzzese Pennines, visit historical venues such as Pompei and Matera. And, if all of this is not enough, get ready to enjoy the Italian night-life! Riding on two wheels through the chic Mediterranean towns of Amalfi, Positano, and Ravello is unforgettable. The visions of historical Matera and witnessing the devastation of Pompei are without words. Endless miles of exciting and picturesque coastal roads of Southern Italy’s shoreline make this trip almost surreal. You surely won’t forget the fabulous food and Italian hospitality.
When you are in Rome you will be staying in 4-star hotels, and when you are on the road you will stay in small, 3 or 4-star family-run hotels which offer comfort, friendliness, and a welcoming atmosphere: something which the big hotels just don’t have. Hear the Road Motorcycle Tours Italy's aim is to give you an intense flavor of Italy, the real Italy.
A private car will transfer you from the airport to the hotel where you will find your Hear The Road host, Enrico, waiting to give you a warm Italian welcome. After you’ve put your luggage in the room and take a good refreshing shower, you convene in the bar of the hotel for a "meet and greet" with your tour colleagues.
Then, you are ready to go to pick up the bikes and bring them to the hotel garage. Back to the hotel, Enrico gives you a general briefing of the tour and will be very glad to answer all your questions. Finally, you are ready to go all together to taste the welcome dinner, where you’ll learn more about what to expect for the next exciting week. Overnight is in Rome.
It’s 9.00 a.m., Saturday morning, the Romans are still sleeping. This is the perfect time to leave Rome without having to deal with its traffic. You head east towards Subiaco where you stop to visit the Abbey of Saint Benedict. Back on the bikes, you ride the narrow scenic road that brings you to Jenne (passing through many natural tunnels dug into the mountain!), and then to Guarcino, where you stop for your first lunch on the road.
Then, with your batteries re-charged, you are ready for a great plunge towards the Mediterranean Sea. You reach Sperlonga just in time to admire the sun setting in the sea while you drink your Italian aperitif to celebrate your first great day on the challenging roads of Southern Italy. Overnight in Sperlonga.
You leave Sperlonga heading South towards Pompei where you stop to visit this famous archaeological site. Pompei is one of the most significant proofs of Roman civilization, and, like an open book, provides outstanding information on the art, customs, trades and everyday life of the past.
Back on the bikes, you will head south again to reach the Costiera Amalfitana. Overnight is in beautiful Ravello.
Today you fall in love with the colors and the fragrances of the Costiera Amalfitana. A day of pure pleasure: riding on the dramatic coastline roads, having lunch on a beautiful terrace facing the sea at Marina di Cantone, shopping in the beautiful city of Positano, drinking an aperitif while sitting at the table of a characteristic bar, waiting for the sun to set into the sea.
But there is also time to visit the factory of the Pasta in Gragnano, where they still make Pasta following old traditions. Overnight is again in Ravello.
You leave Ravello heading south for the last unforgettable ride on the Costiera Amalfitana that brings you to Vietri Sul Mare. Time for a coffee and for the last picture of the coast, and then you are ready to challenge the winding roads of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento.
You will enter Basilicata and a special lunch is waiting for you. You also stop at Latteria Salvia (Diary Salvia) for a cheese tasting. This is really a rare food experience. You will eat all kinds of cheese that the Salvia family continues to produce using production methods of the old pastoral tradition.
Back on the motorcycles, you will join the spectacular Strada Statale Appia, which was built by the Romans to arrive at Brindisi, the port from where merchant ships departed to reach Magna Grecia. Finally, you reach Matera, home of the most outstanding, intact example of a Troglodyte (cave dweller) settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem. Overnight is in Matera.
There is so much to see and do in Matera, so Hear the Road Motorcycle Tours Italy chose this as a free day, where you can visit the town on your own. There are lots of historic buildings to visit as well as some wonderful shopping, Italian style! For those who prefer to ride, they’ve organized an afternoon ride led by Enrico that leaves from and returns to the hotel. Overnight is again in Matera.
You leave Matera and ride more exciting back roads of Basilicata. You will pass through the village of Montescaglioso and Bernalda to get to the coast of the Ionian Sea. Then, you enter Puglia, and still traveling on the coastal road, you reach the walled town of Gallipoli. Overnight is in Gallipoli.
There’s no better day to be on the bikes! From Gallipoli, you head towards Santa Maria di Leuca, know as il Tacco d’Italia (the heel of Italy), just one bend and you are on the other side of Italy! You then head north, following the breathtaking coastline road of Salento to the beautiful city of Lecce, a Baroque masterpiece of Southern Italy. After visiting the city, ride towards Gallipoli. A nice glass of wine will be waiting for you! Overnight is in Gallipoli.
You leave Gallipoli heading North riding along back roads surrounded by century-old olive trees that, with their huge and contorted trunks, seem to remember the faces of wise elders. After a quick break at Ostuni, you reach Alberobello, a town characterized by its famous dry stone huts with conical roofs, called Trulli. After visiting Alberobello, you ride towards the city of Altamura. Overnight in Altamura.
Today is the last day on the coastline roads of Southern Italy, so it has to be a great day! Before reaching the coast you visit the magnificent Castel del Monte, that was built directly on a rocky bank, in some places cropping out, and is famous for its octagonal shape.
Finally, you reach the stunning roads of the Gargano Promontory, with its dramatic cliffs that plunge into the Adriatic Sea. On the way, you pass through the villages of Vieste and Rodi. Overnight is in Termoli.
You leave Termoli heading west towards Rome. This is the “Italian coast to coast” from East to West, which brings you through three spectacular regions: Molise, Abruzzo, and Lazio. You ride along beautiful mountain roads until you reach the village of Anversa Degli Abruzzi.
It is here that you join the highway that brings you back to Rome. After returning the bikes, you arrive back at the hotel in time to freshen up before your final fabulous dinner together celebrating this wonderful Italian motorcycle experience. Overnight in Roma.
Time to say, "arrivederci" to your new friends, collect the souvenirs and cameras and pack the bags. After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport.
If you decide to rent the bike through Hear The Road Motorcycle Tours Italy, the following equipment is included: motorcycle rental with side cases, top case, tank bag, locks, and alarm. The van also has a couple of seats that passengers might like to use if they feel they need a little rest from the bikes!

Enrico has spent many hours developing the routes to ride, the cities to visit, the sites to see, as well as the hotels and food options as keys to make this kind of adventure something to remember and cherish.
The tour will start and end in Rome. You will ride on the beautiful roads of Southern Italy, visiting Sperlonga, Ravello, Amalfi Coast, Matera, and more.
Matera counts about 55,000 inhabitants, is located 400 meters above sea level and is 45 kilometers from the seaside. Much appreciated and renowned for its Sassi districts, the town also boasts other charming and beautiful buildings. You can visit the Dome, built in the 13th century, in Romanesque style, standing impressive on the Civita hill.
The Sassi district is the ancient heart of the city of Matera. The Sassi surround the Civita and constitute a city unto itself, completely carved out of the face of the calcareous rock - what is known as tufo stone. The Sassi district is a system made of dwellings carved out of the steep slopes of a deep valley with surprising and unusual features called the "Gravina". Elegant and multi-faceted buildings are interspersed with underground mazes and cave labyrinths, forming one single stunning landscape.
The price includes daily breakfast in all the hotels you will be staying in. You will also be served welcome and farewell dinners in Rome.
