Guarded for centuries by mountains and men, Lhasa will always be an alluring goal for the adventurer. From the medieval back streets of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, you will enjoy areas crowded with temples, palaces, and colorful market bazaars. The Friendship Highway that climbs forever-upward along the Sun Kosi (River of Gold) toward the foot of Mount Everest will be like the mythical stairway to heaven. In Lhasa, you can see the original home of the exiled Dalai Lama, wonder of the world, and the jewel in the crown of the Tibetan people.
Your accommodations during the tour will be at the best situated or the most culturally desirable. You can hang out at an all teak guest house with loads of character or in one of the oldest lodges in a village. New hotels do have their place, but all depending on what is available. the location where you will be staying during this motorcycle tour from Nepal to Tibet is as follows:
Himalayan Roadrunners will meet you at Kathmandu airport then transfer you to the hotel. After settling into your rooms, mandatory group briefing at 16:00 in the hotel’s garden including the collection of the participants' passports for finalization of the special Nepal to Tibet overland permit. Rest of the afternoon and evening will be free to relax or explore the town.
The morning will be free for sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley. After lunch, transfer to your motorcycle staging point, where after bike assignments and a short shakedown test ride, you will take off towards Thimi and on up to Nagarkot. Nagarkot is a vantage point high on the ridge, and good weather prevailing. You should have super high mountain views in the morning.
Easy morning departure back down the mountain to the medieval city of Bhaktapur, which was once the capital of the entire Kathmandu Valley during the rule of Malla kings. Afternoon free to explore this incredible town, a local tour guide will be provided for anyone who wants an official guided tour. Group dinner will be in the hotel’s rooftop restaurant. You will enjoy great views, sounds of the city center, working temples, and pagodas. You will find old Nepal here.
After breakfast, departure west out of the Kathmandu Valley, with challenging riding getting out of the city traffic to Naubise. Before turning off the main highway for some great smaller paved road, you will be riding through picturesque Nepali villages and countryside. Enjoy your packed lunch en-route. Late afternoon will let you free to wander down to the old Durbar town square, which sadly suffered significant damage during the 2015 earthquakes. it is now under reconstruction. You can enjoy a classic Nepali dinner and stay overnight.
Depart early for the Tibet border then enjoy your packed lunch before arrival on the border. Your Nepal exit immigration and customs formalities will be done. Once cleared, you will cross Kerung into Tibet and meet the Tibetan crew waiting with Land Cruisers. After China immigration and customs formalities, you will move up to town for the remainder of the afternoon and stay overnight there. The staff will proceed the road permits with police. You will enjoy a comfortable accommodation at a newer traditional local guesthouse.
You will have an amazing mountain ride straight off with views of the High Himalaya back towards Nepal including Mount Shishapangma at 8012 meters. The route this morning will take you around stunning Paiku Tso Lake situated at 4595 meters. You will enjoy packed lunch in a local Tibet kitchen followed by direct views of Mount Everest via moving motorcycles with arrival into Tingri late afternoon. Enjoy your basic accommodation in Tibetan style guest house with absolutely stunning views of Cho Oyu and Mount Everest. You should take it easy tonight. You will be on the Tibetan Plateau to ride high. Remember to stay hydrated.
You will have a rest day in Tingri to acclimatize to the new 14,30-feet surroundings. An optional dirt road or off road 3-hour afternoon motorcycle ride to a remote outlying monastery will be interesting. You will stay overnight in Tingri.
Your off-road adventure will begin from Qomolangma Nature Preserve with views of Mount Everest along the way. Your shortcut 70 kilometers per 5 hours can be extremely rough, so please be careful. You will enjoy packed lunch en-route. Afternoon arrival at Rongbuk Monastery, with Toyota Land Cruiser, transfer up to the official Base Camp check post, then return back to the monastery for a quick tour. Stay overnight at the very basic Rongbuk Monastery Guest House.
Today you will enjoy an earlier morning photographs of the mountain, then departure at 08:30 for your rough 100 kilometers ride out over Pang La Pass (5120 meters) with totally stunning views back towards Everest and the entire High Himalaya Range. Late afternoon arrival back on the main paved road will be followed by a strict but quick passport check at the official army check post. then arrive at the small town of Shegar for stay overnight. You will enjoy a comfortable hotel accommodation here with attached baths and hot-running water.
Enjoy a morning ascent over wide open Gatseo La Pass (highest pass on the tour at 5220 meters) and down to the interesting junction town of Lhatse for lunch. You will have a long afternoon ride over a few more passes including Tsho La (4500 meters) through small rural Tibetan agricultural villages in the valley, and on to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. On the late afternoon and early evening, you will be free to relax at the fancy hotel or you can wander the town.
Have a morning tour to the impressive gold-topped Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. The largest working monastery currently in Tibet, Tashi Lhunpo is most famous as the site of the enshrinement of the first Dalai Lama and also the seat of the controversial Panchan Lama. After lunch, back in the saddle for the eastern ride to the outskirts of Gyantse for tremendous views of the Kumbum and Gyantse Dzong. Enjoy your late afternoon for the tour to the Kumbum, one of the most interesting structures in the entire region, and the Pelkor Monastery.
You will be in a morning departure on the brand-new road to Yamdruk Tso Lake. It will be a spectacular riding past an amazing (man-made) emerald lake, followed by stunning up-close views of the always snow-covered Mt. Nojin Kangstan and the Karo La Glacier. The cold ride will bundle up. You will arrive at Narkarse for a buffet lunch. Following the shoreline, you will make the steep sudden ascent and follow the road up over Khamba La Pass with excellent views back over the lake, and then endlessly down to the Brahmaputra River, where you will follow the Kyi Chu River into Lhasa. Your route will take you right past the stunning Potala Palace, the old home of the now exiled 14th Dalai Lama. Comfortable accommodations for your stay will be in Lhasa, and it’s just minutes’ walk to the old quarter and the Barkhor. Old Tibet will be found here, an extremely interesting place.
It will be a must-see morning tour to the Potala Palace. Wear your walking shoes. After lunch, you will have a tour to the Jokhang Temple, the most revered religious structure in Tibet. Late afternoon will be free for last-minute shopping. Group farewell dinner will be tonight at another favorite Lhasa eatery.
You will be transferred to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) in the early morning for the flight back to Kathmandu or China. Alternatively, you may board in the high-altitude train to Beijing.
