Day 1: Countryside riding - Hoi An to Bho Hoong, 110 kilometers / 68 miles

Setting off from Hoi An, it is quickly apparent that this is going to be a journey like none other. The Vietnam countryside comes alive in a whole new way as you pass through the fields and villages of Hoi An on a motorbike.

The route takes you away from the coast and into the hills, an area often inaccessible by normal car. As you wind into the mountains, you’ll come across ancient Cham ruins and famous American war sites, hopping on your bikes to snap photos and explore the tourist-free areas.

As you wind your way up into the hills towards the Lao border, home to the Co Tu minority, you take a break to visit one of the few remaining Co Tu woodcarvers and enjoy a home-cooked lunch in his stilted house before continuing your journey deep in to the mountains, meandering through isolated villages where the culture and traditions remain untouched by time making this remote and staggeringly beautiful region, home to one of the most authentic hill tribes to remain in Vietnam.

You'll arrive in Bho Hoong, a traditional Co Tu village where you will stay for the night. Little has changed in the past hundred years in Bho Hoong and it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Central Vietnam. A light trek through the village outskirts takes you into the surrounding jungle and to rivers, where you can go for a refreshing dip.

The evening is highlighted by a superb dinner of Co Tu traditional dishes, a traditional cultural performance, and a chance to interact with the village residents, gaining more insight into their rich culture. Afterwards, retreat to your stilted Co Tu hut where the serene setting and clear mountain air will lull you to sleep.

  • Meals: lunch and dinner

Day 2: Ho Chi Minh trail - Bho Hoong Village to Khe Sanh via A Luoi, 235 kilometers / 146 miles

Rise and shine for day two of this Hoi An motorbike adventure. After breakfast in the village, you say goodbye to your hosts and resume your motorbike ride to Khe Sanh. Today’s journey traverses the historic Ho Chi Minh Highway through lush rainforests and over magnificent mountain passes. Take a refreshing dip in a mountain waterfall at midday, where you’ll break for a picnic lunch.

You begin the afternoon winding through the A Shau Valley, a ruggedly beautiful valley that became famous during the American War as the site of many battles, the most famous being Khe Sanh, where you stay for the night. Arriving in Khe Sanh, you visit the site of the former marine combat base, capping off an amazing day of riding and history.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 3: Hill tribe country - Khe Sanh to Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, 240 kilometers / 149 miles

Today's ride is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Obtaining special military permission, you are able to drive the remote western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway through a majestic limestone karst and spectacular old-growth jungle. Be amazed at the tenacity of the Vietnamese people during the US war as this road follows the original Ho Chi Minh trail through some of the most rugged terrains on Earth.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 4: Explore the national park - Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, 120 kilometers / 75 miles

Wake to the sounds of rural Vietnam. With a day free to explore Phong Nha National Park, you take a morning motorbike ride to the Paradise limestone cave, the Asia's longest limestone cave. After a traditional Vietnamese lunch at the national park’s restaurant, you can wander around the grotto systems. In the afternoon, you travel to Dong Hoi for some beachside luxury, resting those biker bones.

Note that all day activities in Phong Nha are included in the tour price although the participation is optional.

  • Meals: breakfast and lunch

Day 5: Tunnel and trails - Dong Hoi to Hue, 200 kilometers / 124 miles

Driving along Ho Chi Minh Highway East, you arrive at the Vinh Moc tunnels where an entire village went underground in the 1960s to survive the bombing during the war. After exploring the tunnels, you head to a local beach where you can cool off with a swim. After lunch, you cross the 17th parallel, the former north and south divide, then drive along the coastline arriving in Hue late afternoon.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 6: Culture and sights - Hue, 40 kilometers / 25 miles

On day six, you do a comprehensive motorbike tour of Hue. The tour visits the citadel, royal tombs while snaking through the back streets of Hue. A delicious vegetarian lunch prepared by Buddhist nuns is served at a local pagoda. After lunch, you experience the rural surrounds of Hue, stopping to see traditional handicrafts being made as well as visiting some US war sites. Note that all day activities in Hue are included in the tour price although the participation is optional.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 7: The coast road - Hue to Hoi An, 190 kilometers / 118 miles

Rise and shine, it’s time to set off on the final day of your Hoi An motorbike adventure. Today’s journey takes you back to Hoi An by a different route, trading in the mountains for Vietnam’s gorgeous coastline. You head east from Hue and then travel parallel to the sea, passing through fishing villages and along pristine sandy beaches for the first part of the drive.

The salty air and refreshing sea breezes are a dramatic contrast to the mountain air from the previous days. You’ll stop often to dip your toes in the sea, chat with fishermen, and take photos. At the halfway point of your drive, you climb to Highway 1’s highest point, Hai Van Pass, where panoramic views of the coast are all around. The road then winds down toward Hoi An, passing through Da Nang city and along the coastline.
