This tour with Jukkasjaervi VildmarksTurer AB will bring you to explore the mysterious Finnish arctic tundra with skies flooded by polar lights and the magical Alps of Norway in a snowmobile. In this snowmobile tour, you will also have the chance to gain insight into Sami culture and cuisine, their daily work with the reindeers, as well as industrial and craft traditions.

You will stay in various accommodations including a camp at Vakkakoski and a cozy little hut near Karesuando, Sweden, as well as a camp in Kilpisjärvi, Finland.


Day 1: Arrival in Kiruna (approximately 30 kilometers / 19 miles)

The adventure will begin right after your arrival at Kiruna Airport (KRN). After changing into warmer clothes and a short briefing on the use of snowmobiles, the tour starts. Driving along the Torne River, the ride will lead to your camp, Vakkakoski, situated on a small island in the middle of the river. For dinner, you will be served a delicious three-course menu with Nordic specialties. These include for example reindeer, moose, or the capercaillie. In the evening, there will also be the possibility to use the sauna.

Day 2: Kiruna (approximately 40 - 50 kilometers / 25 - 31 miles)

Led by the instructions of a professional, you will learn to handle the snowmobile better and to face the challenges of this northern terrain. On this tour, you will pass untouched landscapes covered in snow, birch and pine forests, and across frozen seas and lakes. You will get a first impression on the never-ending, magical vastness of the north. For lunch, there will be a picnic in the wild. This special day will be completed with another culinary specialty and a relaxing time in the sauna.

Day 3: Kiruna - Karesuando (200 kilometers / 124 miles)

You will leave the Vakkakoski camp and follow a trail across the Torne River, passing the village of Jukkasjärvi. This is where the famous ice hotel is situated. Of course, you will get to enjoy a short visit there. From there, the tour continues passing snowy hills, frozen swamps, and marshland to Karesuando. The night will be spend in a cozy little hut near Karesuando. Dinner will be served in a lavu (Sami tent). You will taste the delicious Sami specialty, souvas, which will be prepared on open fire.

Day 4: Karesuando - Kilpisjärvi (120 kilometers / 75 miles)

Today, you will follow the Victoria trail and the Könkämäriver (Sweden’s most northern boundary river) further north. Throughout the following three nights, you will stay at Kilpisjärvi, close to the Norwegian and Finnish border.

Day 5: Hatteng (80 - 100 kilometers / 50 - 62 miles)

Another special highlight is Hatteng. Today's destination is at the Norwegian coastline. You will drive through high alpine terrain, exiting inclinations and deep canyons. For this magnificent tour, all the learned skills and techniques will be needed to handle the snowmobile successfully. You will be rewarded with a mouth-watering lunch in a restaurant. The round-tour will lead back to the camp at Kilpisjärvi, where you can reload your energy in the sauna after dinner.

Day 6: Pältsa-Cabins and Treriksröset (approximately 50 kilometers / 31 miles)

Today, you will pass stunning, untouched wilderness and snow-covered landscapes. You will visit the Pältsa-Cabins (huts) and the surrounding area in most northern Swedish territory. You will see the border monument Treriksröset in the tri-border region.

Day 7: Kilpisjärvi - Kiruna (approximately 220 kilometers / 137 miles)

You will make your way back in southern direction via Tsaaktso, a former Sami sacrificial site. Part of your journey will be on one of the most famous hiking trails in Scandinavia, the Kungsleden (Kings’ Path). You will cross a gigantic high plateau, long lakes, and several other Sami sacrificial sites before you reach your destination, Vakkakoski. Here, you will be served a delicious last dinner and can enjoy one last time the relaxing sauna accompanied by a refreshing beer.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, you will return to Kiruna Airport (KRN) and return the snowmobiles and other lent materials.


This is only an approximate plan dependent on local conditions such as the weather. Thus, slight changes in the schedule may occur. Since this is a preliminary itinerary, wind, snow, ice conditions, etc. can change tour plan underway. The prerequisites for this tour are normal fitness, flexibility, and capability to work in a team.

The driving license is required for driving snowmobile (license for car or motorbike).

This snowmobile tour will take place in Sweden and Finland. You will explore various locations around Lapland including Kiruna, Karesuando, Kilpisjärvi, Hatteng, and more.


You will be served meals on a full-board basis. For gourmet dinner, Jukkasjaervi VildmarksTurer AB can offer three different menus.

  • Whitefish roe served with traditional condiments and crispy northern style bread, filet of reindeer with potato tureen and lingo berry gravy, and ice cream with warm cloudberries
  • Shiitake soup with toast and ‘Västerbotten’ cheese, grouse with grilled almond potatoes, served with black current gravy, and cloudberry parfait
  • Salad on reindeer with a horseradish dressing served with black rye bread, grilled arctic char with pressed potato and lime butter, and blueberry pie with vanilla sauce
