This is a unique motorcycle adventure in the Greater Himalayas that will test your riding skills and inspire the poet adventurer as you experience these surreal landscapes, cultures, and people. Traversing several mountain passes, you will be literally riding on top of the world! On top of it all, the remote settings and temporary settlements will give you a whole new definition to 'remote' and untouched.
You will stay for 7 nights in various accommodations including hotels and boutique homestays. The start of the trip sets the tone for the rest of the journey and the end of the trip is an intimate moment to reflect, relish, and basically have one big party.
The properties Karma Yatri uses at various locations, that serve as start and endpoints of the itinerary, are unique and carefully selected. The properties combine the best in hospitality that the region has to offer, great food, and the ability for you all to behave like a group.
Transfer to the hotel and ensure that you spend the day relaxing and indulging only in mild physical activity. Keep vigilant for signs of AMS (acute mountain sickness). You will then have a meet and greet with the team.
The day begins relatively easy, as you are going to spend a further day acclimatizing. You get on your bikes and travel along the gorgeous Nh1. You continue at a low altitude in order to ensure that you are getting better acclimatized, but the adventure has begun.
You pass the dramatic confluence of the Indus and the Zanskar River as you ride into Sham valley. You divert off towards the monastery of Alchi to witness one of Ladakh's architectural wonders and break for lunch. You continue onwards to your night halt at the quaint village of Tingmosgang.
You return on the same road but taking diversions to smaller, lesser-known villages and some monasteries that are of interest in these parts. Likir, Basgo fort, Phyang village are some of your stops today. You stop at Leh for lunch and any last-minute shopping. You reach your guest house towards the evening. You should be well used to your bikes by now, as tomorrow is a new challenge as you attempt to cross K-top, once the highest road in the world.
Today's ride takes you across Khardung La at the elevation of 5,348 meters (18,400 feet). You will cross into the stunning Nubra Valley and ride to the sand dunes of Hunder after a stopover at Diskit Gompa. Overnight at Hunder village.
You start early as you will be riding long KM’s today. It is only been a few years, that Turtuk has been opened to tourism. Its proximity to the Pakistani border made it a highly sensitive region. It’s a journey back in time, seeing the untouched beauty of the landscape and charm of its people. Mostly uninhabited the landscape is dotted with small towns, some monasteries, and many army camps. The village of Turtuk is a green Oasis and its people are superbly hospitable.
After loading up your gear, you're ready to leave Hundar and cruise through the majestic plains of Shyok an undulating stretch of tarmac that runs along the Shyok river.
You will stop for a picnic lunch before you ascend Warli La, a 5000 meters+ pass and one of the most spectacular. You then proceed further to the village of Sakti for a quick break and then attempt another high pass ‘Chang La’ (5289 m) to arrive at the shores of Pangong Tso (a 134 km long endorheic lake and one of the largest brackish lakes in Asia). You camp close to the shore, relax and take in the changing colors as the sunsets.
You can rise early today, for a chance to catch a spectacular sunrise over the lake. You will, however, begin the ride post-breakfast allowing the sun to soak some heat into your bodies as you make your journey back to Leh. You will backtrack on the same road through Chang La, break for a late lunch closer to Leh and return to your hotel by early evening. You will have the evening to visit the market, you will return to your hotel and your final night together. Tour ends.
Departure from Leh.
Two decades of motorcycling and the opportunity to live in many parts of India and Europe. A passion that keeps growing with every riding season. New roads to discover, more friends to ride with is his mantra. He speaks Hindi, Kashmiri, Tamil, English, German, French and a smattering of other Indian dialects. A native of Kashmir means that a vast network that can be called upon in case of any emergency or contingencies.
Chai or the omnipresent Indian tea is a very important part of your trip. From early morning, starts to your numerous stops by the road, this (often) milky and sweet beverage is like a road trip elixir, providing a much-needed break for the bum sore you will inevitably experience on these roads.
Food is a mix of local and continental, allowing you to experience the local cuisine but ensuring that your taste buds are not overpowered by the spicy Indian fare.
