9 Days Guided Breathtaking Motorcycle Tour in Kenya and Tanzania

Msambweni - Amboseli National Park - Sagala - Mombasa, Kenya; Lushoto - Marangu, Tanzania

Adventurous Motorcycle Tour Kenya and Tanzania

Join this eventful and fascinating motorcycle tour in the heart of Africa! You pass through various landscapes such as the fantastic green scenery around the Usambara Mountains, also known as the vegetable garden of Tanzania. You ride your bikes around the mighty Kilimanjaro, the snow-covered, highest mountain of Africa, with its south-side full of tropical banana plantations, fields of grain on the north-side, and to the west, the arid savanna where the Maasai try to survive with their cattle. Here, you have the opportunity to do a real wildlife safari in the immensely vast Tsavo National Park or the famous Amboseli National Park. You also spend the night in a bush camp, far away from the inhabited world. Enjoy savanna, mountains, plantations, volcanoes, people and their villages, animals, eateries, vistas, and above all, friendly people. This tour is carried out in cooperation with Motorsafaris.

Day 1: Arrival Mombasa - Msambweni, 50 kilometers / 31 miles

At the Moi International Airport (MBA), you will be picked up by a Motorsafaris guide who will take you on a two-hour journey to Sawa Sawa Beach House in Msambweni. Relax with a snack and a drink on the beach or at the pool. In the afternoon, you have your first test ride along the coast.

Day 2: Msambweni - Lushoto, 290 kilometers / 180 miles

Breakfast at dawn, you leave at 6 p.m. After about 60 kilometers of bad asphalt, you reach Kenya - Tanzania border. Paperwork at the border of Tanzania will cost you around two hours. Make sure you have your passport, vaccination booklet, dollars, and a pen in your pocket. Fortunately, there is always plenty to see at the border. When you finally enter Tanzania, you will first drive on a nice wide asphalt road. After about 30 kilometers, you turn into the bush for a wonderful ride on good quality gravel roads and you drive along authentic villages. You get a lot of impressions in Soni near Lushoto town at 1,300 meters altitude. It is cool on the Usambara Mountains.

Day 3: Lushoto - Marangu, 280 kilometers / 174 miles

On your way to Mount Kilimanjaro, you will first go through a beautiful route through the Usambara Mountains. You leave the mountains along a steep descent with beautiful views. Down the mountain is the hot savannah. Lunch will be in a local restaurant and then ride 100 kilometers hot mix of asphalt along the Pare Mountains or possibly you take the 100 kilometers gravel north of the Pare Mountains. You spend the night on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro in Marangu, a village where the climb starts to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Marangu - Amboseli National Park, 210 kilometers / 130 miles

Today, you will drive around the Kili all the time on your right. The Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters high. Another 50 kilometers of asphalt and then you go off-road driving in the dry savannah where the Maasai let their cows eat the last grass. On the north side, the landscape changes slowly in grain fields and large fields. You rise further and come in coniferous forests at an altitude of 2,100 meters. When the road becomes asphalt again, you arrive at the border of Tanzania and Kenya where you return at Tarakea to Kenya. Here, you even have an even better view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 5: Amboseli National Park (safari)

This day is reserved for those of you who want to visit the Amboseli National Park. That means an early rise, as the best time to see the wildlife and also Mount Kilimanjaro is early in the morning. Enjoy elephants, zebras, lions, and much more besides, stunning nature and wonderful photo opportunities with the impressive Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. The extra cost is 100 EUR as this visit is a special experience. Have lunch in a lodge with a swimming pool and Wi-Fi access.

Day 6: Amboseli - Sagala, 220 kilometers / 137 miles

First, ride through a bad, long road past farms that benefit from the meltwater of Mount Kilimanjaro. In addition to the Mombasa Highway, this is the only east-west connection in Kenya. Have an African lunch at restaurant 'Never give up' and then on brand new asphalt, you drive through Tsavo Park to the sisal plantations of Mwatate. You are now in the Taita Hills and you reach the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. But after 20 kilometers, you turn back into the bush in and spend the night in Sagala Lodge. There are a small pool and nice houses. The 5 kilometers long access road to the lodge is a good exercise for driving through loose sand.

Day 7: Sagala - Mombasa, 220 kilometers / 137 miles

You take time to enjoy the wilderness and then leave to Mombasa. After a long and beautiful dirt road, you reach the Nairobi-Mombasa road. Pay attention while driving. Just before Mombasa, there will definitely be traffic jams. They are working on new roads and flyovers but you must also drive the narrow dusty pathways. In your dusty suits, you drive into the large city. In a busy city, you will stay at a hotel in a quiet place close to the old town.

Day 8: Mombasa - Msambweni Beach

After breakfast, there is an opportunity to do a walk through the city. In around two hours, an expert guide shows you interesting parts of the old town of Mombasa. Mombasa is a really interesting city. A hodgepodge of cultures; Indians, Arabs, Africans, and some whites. The city is more than 500 years old and has a rich history. Around noon, you leave for a short ride to the beach resort. On the ferry with a few thousand people on board, the engines are in front so that it shoots good. At the end of the afternoon, take a refreshing dip in the pool. The cook is ready with a traditional welcome snack and the cold beer tastes fine.

Day 9: Msambweni - Mombasa - flight departure

Depending on your flight, you will go to Mombasa early today for your flight home.

Level of difficulty

The altitude reached during this tour through Tanzania isn’t really worth a mention. Daily distances are not very long. There is enough time for photo opportunity stops en route, and for visits to villages.

This tour suits all healthy motorcyclists. You ride on asphalted main roads and frequently follow a variety of narrow routes off the beaten track. About a third of the route is on unpaved roads. However, these are hard-packed gravel roads. The unpaved roads are not difficult but an off-road training course is recommended. The motorcycles are light and maneuverable enduro bikes.
