Program

Day 1: Faro Airport (FAO) to Tróia Peninsula

Along the west coast, you can set off to discover Rota Vicentina. You will be accompanied by the ocean between, Lagos - Sagres to Aljezur (Arrifana) and the best of the EN 120 and the EN 390. One of the most beautiful and best preserved coastal areas of Europe.

The “historical way”, at approximately 140 kilometers / 87 miles, is the longest route and goes from Cape of São Vicente to Santiago do Cacém. Towns and villages with centuries of history, and can be done.

The other option of arrival is from Lisbon. You can reach Tróia Peninsula via Alcácer do Sal or by ferry from Setúbal, crossing the Sado River. On arrival, the Tróia Peninsula offers much to be explored. You can play golf, have surfing lessons, walk along the beach, or watch the dolphins (not Included).

You can also wander about to discover the region's cultural heritage, such as the Carrasqueira village on stilts and the Tróia Roman ruins which actually reveal how the area was already rich in natural resources two thousand years ago.

Signs of human habitation in Tróia date back many centuries. The Roman ruins are among the most important archaeological remains, dating from the first century. They were the biggest complex for the production of conserves and fish sauce in the Western Roman Empire and this is also an evidence of the importance of fishing in the local economy since long ago.

After Tróia Peninsula, Comporta is a much-appreciated spot for a family beach outing and has some good restaurants. This is a paddy field area, so rice-based dishes are an unmissable specialty.

Located on the southern tip of the Tróia Peninsula, the huge sandy extent of Comporta Beach is a regular summer favorite, given good means of access and plenty of parking space.

Forming part of the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, Comporta Beach has been well-preserved with the original dune vegetation surviving along with the adjoining pine forest. The two-night overnight stay is in Comporta or Alcácer do Sal.

Day 2: Alcácer do Sal to Faro

From Alcácer do Sal (named by the Romano de Salacia Urbs Imperatoria), after an Alentejano breakfast, visit the castle and looking south, there is a sharp bend in the Sado River, irrigating the smooth green plain that pre-empts the great Alentejan plain.

Take the opportunity to look in on some of the main points of interest such as the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo (Saint Mary of the Castle), the Chapel of Senhor dos Mártires (Lord of the Martyrs), the Church of Santo António (Saint Anthony), the Church of Santiago, and the Municipal Museum of Archaeology.

During the afternoon, in the vicinity and all within a range of 30 kilometers, the chance to see the villages of Santa Susana (a small church, with two 16th century panels), Santa Catarina, and the Vale do Gaio Dam.

It's time to go back.
