Upper Mustang motorcycling tour is an adventure trip from Nepal. Indian nationalities can bring their own bikes from any border between Nepal and India. This Upper Mustang tour's purpose is to reach the most stunning valley with spectacular mountain views and get involved in a direct touch with the remote ethnic cultural group of Nepal.

This tour includes five nights' stay at some hotels in Kathmandu and in Pokhara. The hotels are three-star category hotels with breakfast and they are based on a twin sharing room. The accommodation in the entire trekking will be at local tea houses (local guest houses) based on a twin sharing room. You will get a room with an inside toilet in Kagbeni and in Jomsom only. The rest of your overnight stay will not have a toilet inside the room while all the tea houses will provide common toilets outside your room.

Upper Mustang region has limited tea house accommodations and at the time of the main season, the number of trekkers staying there might overflow. In that situation, you may share a common room with other trekkers.


This tour starts from the natural city of Pokhara and reached the landscape of beautiful Tibetan plateau of Upper Mustang and further to Tibet border. You will ride through a recently build dirt road by following Kali Gandaki River George. You will also ride through the village of lower Mustang, Beni, Tatopani, Marpha, Jomsom, Muktinath, and Kagbeni and reach the final destination in Lo Manthang of Upper Mustang. You will have two days exploration here inside the capital city of Upper Mustang.

At the beginning, this tour will have time to explore major historical places in Kathmandu valley. You will ride to Pokhara via a busy highway. You will find a well-paved road up to Beni from Pokhara and start riding on a rough road.

Tatopani is the first overnight stay in Mustang area and it has a natural hot spring where you can have an evening relaxation in the natural bathing ponds. You will ride to Jomsom with panoramic mountains of Annapurna Himalayan range and ride further to Muktinath and Kagbeni. After Kagbeni, you formally cross the Upper Mustang area and ride for another two more days to reach the capital city of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang.


Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Nepal Highland Treks' representative will pick you up from the international airport and transfer you to the hotel. If time permits, you can talk about your trip and collect your original passport for final receiving of Upper Mustang special permit.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley

Today is the first ride with your motorcycle. Your guide and the backup transportation will escort you to three major places of Kathmandu valley. Pashupatinath temple, Bauddhanath stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square, which are all listed in UNESCO Heritage Sites. After that, back to the hotel and have the final preparation of your trip from tomorrow.

Day 3: Kathmandu - Pokhara, 200 kilometers / 125 miles

It takes seven hours drive with your motorbike to Pokhara. The road is completely a busy highway. Pokhara is a natural city of Nepal. Beautiful lakes and laps of Annapurna range can be seen from your hotel. You will have an evening walk around Pokhara's lakeside. Stay overnight at a hotel.

Day 4: Pokhara - Kalopani, 125 kilometers / 78 miles

You will start driving after your breakfast in the hotel. You will ride on a paved road until you reach Beni. It will take about 104 kilometers and three hours. The rough road begins after Beni. While riding, you can see the bank of Kali Gandaki River and huge waterfalls. You will reach Tatopani and further drive to Kalopani. Kalopani is the viewpoint of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak, and glaciers. Stay overnight at a guest house.

  • Riding duration: six hours

Day 5: Kalopani - Muktinath - Kagbeni, 65 kilometers / 41 miles

You will start riding after breakfast in Kalopani. You will find a rough road through Kali Gandaki river with a scenic Himalayan range of Annapurna, Nilgiri and, Dhaulagiri. You will reach Muktinath (3800 meters) where you can visit the holy sight Muktinath temple and a Buddhist monastery. You will ride back down to Kagbeni for an overnight stay. Kagbeni has an interesting place to visit that may suit for your evening walking tour. Stay overnight at a local tea house.

  • Riding duration: five to six hours

Day 6: Kagbeni - Ghami

You also can explore the typical village of Kagbeni in the morning then reach Upper Mustang area after crossing a permit checking point at the end of Kagbeni village. You will ride via the bank of Kali Gandaki River and typical settlement of local people. You will pass a 3,800-meter altitude village and Nya La pass of 4,010 meters. You will reach Ghami and stay overnight at a local tea house.

  • Riding duration: seven hours

Day 7: Ghami - Lo Manthang,

Today is a quite exciting day as you will reach the ultimate destination of this tour, Lo Manthang. You will cross several Mani walls and a big village called Charang. You can always see the panoramic mountain view from a different angle. You will then see the wall covered village from afar. It is better to take a rest once you reach the tea house which will help your body to acclimatize. Stay overnight at a local tea house.

Day 8: Explore Lo Manthang by walking

Today, you will explore around Lo Manthang by walking. There is Namgyal Gumpa which is situated on the hilltop of a valley and an important place for the local peoples. Your tour continues to Tingkhar village. Tingkhar village is the last village and the main village of Lo Manthang. If time permits, you can visit another attraction of the four stories of King Palace with panoramic Himalayan view surroundings. Stay overnight at a local tea house.

Day 9: Lo Manthang - Kora la (Tibetan border) - Lo Manthang

You will ride to the Nepal-Tibet border, Kora La. It will take you about 20 kilometers, one way from Lomanthang. You will get the view of Himalayas and the valley. You will come again to Lo Mantang for an overnight stay. Stay overnight at a local tea house.

Day 10: Lo Manthang - Ghilling.

You will ride back to the same way to Ghilling, greeted by the same view of the plateau land and the panoramic Himalayas during the whole day. Stay overnight at a guest house.

Day 11: Ghilling - Kagbeni

Today you will ride back to Kagbeni. If you still get time, you can have a walking tour around the village and monasteries. Stay overnight at a guest house.

Day 12: Kagbeni - Tatopani

You will ride back to Tatopani via Jomsom, Marpha, and other typical villages. Enjoy bathing in a natural hot spring. Stay overnight at a guest house

Day 13: Tatopani - Pokhara

It is the same way back to Pokhara. You will have enough time to walk around the lakeside after checking into your hotel. Stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 14: Pokhara - Kathmandu

It is the same way back to Kathmandu. You will ride through a major highway route. Stay overnight at a hotel.

Day 15: Departure home

Today is your final departure to your home. Nepal Highland Treks will drop you at the international airport.

Motorcycle rental info

You may come with your own motorbike. Motorbike hiring is available in Kathmandu. You can choose your own. The easy bikes are suitable and more comfortable in this tour. KTM Duke, Tornado XR, or Honda CRF are recommended ones. That cost you 25 USD to 70 USD per day without fuel.


The guide, mechanic, and back up jeep driver to Upper Mustang are from Kathmandu. They are Nepal Highland Treks' English speaking regular staffs who are responsible, friendly, and helpful. You will meet them in Kathmandu before starting your trip. They do not ride a bike and stay inside the jeep. Your all stuff also will be in the jeep. It will just follow you from behind. All the staff is fully equipped and insured. The package is included their foods and accommodation on the way.

Please take your guide with you in every hiking and climbing. Your guide will always be with you while you ride every day. There are a few days in the itinerary spend as acclimatization days and hiking around to recover your stamina. Please take your guide with you in all of these activities. You are in Himalaya and don't get too excited, take advice from your guide to take any decision.

This tour will lead you from Kathmandu to several places in Nepal including Pokhara, Kalopani, Muktinath, Kagbeni, Ghami, Lo Manthang, and Ghilling.

Lo Manthang

Lo Manthang is the ancient kingdom of Nepal that lies in the Trans Himalayan range. The region is culturally rich as the people here are Tibetan and local Thakali. They speak different languages and have the synthesis of Tibetan and Nepalese culture. There are hundred years of old monasteries, caves, palaces, and scenic settlement of local villages that are unique to explore here.

Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang area is a rain shadow area of Nepal and a direct touch of Tibetan plateau. It is a hidden world of old Buddhist kingdom. The lifestyle of the people, their language, and their cultures are closely tied with Tibet, this is why the region Upper Mustang is also called small Tibet in Nepal.


Kathmandu and Pokhara have lots of restaurants to choose for your lunch and dinner. Breakfast is included in the package that is provided by the same hotel you are staying. During your trekking, the same tea houses you are going to stay provide you breakfast and dinner. Lunch is on the way at a suitable place. All the foods during trekking are included in the packages. Hotel and restaurants provide you international standard foods in entire Upper Mustang.

Please do not throw foods after you order. All of the food is carried from Pokhara or from Kathmandu. It will take a week to deliver all the food in the area of Lo Manthang. It is important that you order only sufficient food which you can finish. Do not waste any food in the region. Meat is not fresh in the high region. The meat will be carried from out of the region. This is the reason why the meat is not fresh.

Drinking water will be at an extra cost. During the trek, bottled mineral water is available. You can boil water to fill in your own bottle from every tea houses or you can use even normal water from the tap. Bottled mineral water is available in every guest houses and shops in entire Upper Mustang. As you hike on high altitude, cost of bottled mineral water and boil filtered water will increase.

Water from local taps can also be used as drinking water by using a purification tablet and filter the water yourself. Most of the trekkers drink a bottled of mineral water and boiled filtered water as they use local tap water rarely.
