This 4 Lakes and 10 Passes of Ladakh Tour is founded on Planet Way Round's 20 years of experience with motorcycle expeditions in Ladakh. You can expect new tracks, passes and highlights never before offered on an organized motorcycle tour. This is the first tour to take on 12 extremely high Himalayan passes – you’ll be hitting altitudes of over 5,000 meters five times and tackling the three highest passes in the world! The route covers all of the highlights of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh, as well as the three most beautiful Himalayan lakes in the border region to Tibet – all at altitudes of more than 4,500 meters.
During the tour, you will stay in guesthouses, tents, and hotels.
Get acquainted with the Royal Enfields. Sightseeing, acclimatization.
This will be the first day on your Royal Enfield. You will drive to the famous Lamayuru Abbey. Ahead of us a beautiful route, full of views, mostly onto new asphalt. Spend the night at a guesthouse at Lamayuru.
Today you will have the opportunity to cross the rarely visited Ladakh area: Dah Valley and Hannu. The people in this valley look quite different than the other inhabitants of Ladakh; they are of more Indo-European than Tibetan type. The area is also warmer and greener. Kargil, in turn, is a Muslim city. For a while, it feels like you move to another world. Rest for the night at a Kargil guesthouse.
Today you return to the Buddhist world in its classic edition. You’ll find that the route is already partially familiar to you, but it looks different from the other side! Accommodation will be in a guesthouse.
Enjoy the route via a picturesque road situated above the canyon of the Indus River back toward Leh. This time you will not enter the town, but you will go further through the beautiful valley of the Indus.
Along the way, you will see the palace - the seat of the first rulers of Ladakh, Shey, and the most impressive Buddhist monastery in the entire region, Thiksey. In 2016, it hosted the Dalai Lama himself. In the afternoon, you bid farewell to the main trail and turn into the valley towards Pangong Tso Lake. Accommodation is in a guesthouse.
The third highest, approved for traffic pass in the world, Chang La (5,360 meters), is awaiting you. From the pass, you go down the winding mountain road above one of the most beautiful lakes in the world: Pangong Tso. It is a lake bordering China and 60% of its surface belongs to China. Today you will partly drive on gravels. Accommodation is in a camp, in specially prepared tents.
Today is not an easy route, but an unforgettable one; enjoy a ride entirely along the Shyok River. The program does not involve any passes, but it will sometimes be "curvy" and on gravel.
Certainly, you are going to take a rest a break from altitudes, but it will be much warmer - it may even be boiling hot. If due to weather conditions (e.g. landslides) the road should be closed, you will go through the Wari La Pass. Accommodation is in a hotel.
By today you will already be enough accustomed to high altitudes. This is the perfect moment to take on the highest pass approved for traffic in the world, Khardung La (5,602 meters). Before you get to it, you will visit the world’s highest altitude desert. Volunteers can try their hand at sand dunes. The route includes partly gravel road. Accommodation is in a hotel.
Today, you cope with the second highest pass in the world: Taglang La (5,359 meters). After that, you go down on the picturesque plateau of More Plains (4,600 meters). In the last kilometers, an asphalt highway will turn into pleasant gravel, which will lead you to the salt Tso Kar Lake. Accommodation in specially prepared tents.
The Tso Moriri lake is a strict nature reserve. The emerald waters usually surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks look stunning. En route, you will be able to relax at a hot geyser and see the last Himalayan nomads. The road is 60% gravel. Accommodation will be in specially prepared tents.
A picturesque highway leads you back to Leh. You will pass and visit some hot springs.
This is the end of the holiday.
Admire the nature of the Himalayas, ride on challenging mountain passes, and visit various places such as Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Tso Kar Lakes, Buddhist abbeys in the Valley of Indus, and Lamayuru Abbey. Apart from those fascinating locations, this tour will take place on 12 extremely high Himalayan passes and four lakes in India:
