Route 66 and Other Famous Western Trails Motorcycle Tours USA

Join this tour beginning in Chicago and riding the famous Route 66, breaking out to explore the wonderful scenery of the wild, wild west, before ending your tour at Santa Monica in Sunny California. Along the way visit fabled Roswell (you might see a UFO) Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, the Grand Canyon, the amazing giant sequoia trees, and sections of the PCH in California.

During this tour, you will be accommodated in comfortable, modern hotels either in twin or single rooms.

Program

Day 1

  • Arrive at Chicago International Airport.
  • Shuttle to your hotel in Chicago area. (shuttle fee included in your tour package)
  • Check in and then shuttle (shuttle fee included in your tour package) to bike rental location. Complete documentation and familiarize yourself with it.
  • Ride / return to hotel.
  • Safety meeting to review road rules and riding safety requirements.
  • Enjoy a “Get to know you” dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 2: Chicago to St. Louis MI via Springfield (325 miles / 546 kilometers / approximately 5.5 hours riding)

  • Leave Chicago and head South towards the St. Louis.
  • Follow Route 66 through the rolling countryside of the Midwest. Use this day to get the feel of your bike as you begin your adventure.
  • Stop along the way for photos in the small towns that sprung up along the Mother Road.
  • Continue South as you head to St. Louis for your hotel for the night.
  • In St. Louis visit the world-famous St. Louis Arch (park entrance fee included in your tour package)

Day 3: St. Louis to Joplin, Missouri via Springfield (289 miles / 486 kilometers / approximately 4.75 hours riding)

  • Leave St. Louis and ride west on Highway #44 through the bush covered rolling countryside of Missouri.
  • The miles will melt away today as you settle into the rhythm of the road and enjoy the experience.
  • Stops along the way allow you to experience the small-town hospitality of this friendly state.
  • Continue onto Joplin for the night.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Joplin to Amarillo, Texas via Tulsa and Oklahoma City (480 miles / 810 kilometers / approximately 7 hours riding)

  • Continuing southwest, you will enter Oklahoma and cruise through the lake country of this Western State.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Enjoy forest and rolling country riding alongside lakes and natural areas.
  • Skiting Oklahoma you will ride out onto the open prairies of the wild west before entering Texas.
  • Stop for the night in Amarillo Texas.
  • Dinner in Amarillo.

Day 5: Amarillo to Santa Fe, New Mexico via Clovis and Roswell (409 miles / 687 kilometers / approximately 6.5 hours riding)

  • Leaving Amarillo head southwest on Highway 60 towards Clovis.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Continue Southwest on Highway 70 towards Roswell, famous for its involvement with extra-terrestrial aliens, crossing the Pecos River along the way.
  • Lunch in Roswell, with the possibility of visiting the Space Museum.
  • Head north on Highway 285 to Clines corner. A stop here to check out the souvenirs is a must.
  • Continue north on Highway 285 to bring you to your stop for the night in Santa Fe.
  • Dinner in Santa Fe.

Day 6: Santa Fe - Rest day (100 miles / 170 kilometers)

  • This is your day, take care of laundry, catch up on organizing photos and notes, write some postcards to impress friends and family, do nothing or enjoy an optional ride to visit Madrid, showcased in the movie Wild Hogs.
  • Head South on Highway 14
  • Lunch in Madrid
  • Return on Highway 14 to Santa Fe for the night.
  • Dinner in Santa Fe.

Day 7: Santa Fe to Durango, Colorado via Taos and Pagosa Springs (271 miles / 456 kilometers / approximately 4.5 hours riding)

  • Travel north on Highway 84 / 68 towards Taos to cruise through the Northern portion of New Mexico.
  • From Taos continue east to ride across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, before riding some tight switch backs as you head northwest towards Colorado.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Continue north through the Colorado mountains towards Pagosa Springs.
  • Continue west to bring you to your stop for the night in the western town of Durango, Colorado.
  • Dinner in Durango.

Day 8: Durango to Page, Arizona via Monument Valley (313 miles / 526 kilometers / approximately 5.5 hours riding)

  • Travel west towards Utah turning onto Highway 41 (Trail of the Ancients) to ride through the canyons of Utah.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Have your GoPro ready for today.
  • Following the San Juan River brings you to Bluff, Utah before turning southwest on Highway 191.
  • Heading southwest brings you into the famous scenic Monument Valley located in the Navajo Nation.
  • A stop in Kayenta for lunch provides an opportunity to visit the “Wind Talkers” display memorializing the contribution by members of the Navajo Nation during WWII.
  • Swinging northwest continues to take you through the amazing scenery as you ride towards your stop for the night in Page, Arizona.
  • Dinner in Page.

Day 9: Page to Williams, Arizona via Horseshoe Bend and the Grand Canyon (200 miles / 335 kilometers / approximately 3.5 hours riding)

  • Have your GoPro ready for today.
  • After breakfast, head south to stop to visit Horseshoe Bend. (well worth a stop; however, a ¾ mile walk each way is required with changing elevation. This can be strenuous. It is better in the cool of the morning)
  • Continue south towards the Grand Canyon.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Have your GoPro ready for today.
  • Stop along the way to visit a Trading Post before leaving the Navajo Nation.
  • Turn West towards the Grand Canyon National Park.
  • Enter the national park (park entrance fee included in your tour package)
  • Multiple stops along the rim provide amazing views.
  • Visit Grand Canyon Village and walk the South Rim to experience this wonder of the world close up.
  • Leaving the Canyon, ride south to take you towards your stop for the night in Williams, Arizona where you will rejoin Route 66.
  • Dinner in Williams.

Day 10: Williams to Barstow, California via Peach Springs and Oatman (330 miles / 550 kilometers / approximately 5.25 hours riding)

  • Another GoPro day, have it ready.
  • Stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • After breakfast, head west before turning onto the original Route 66 to follow it through to Kingman and then onto Oatman.
  • Stop to visit Oatman which has not changed much from the days when it was the center of the gold rush in times gone by. Feed the donkeys while you stroll the main street.
  • After a break, head out on Route 66 pointing west across a corner of the Mojave Desert leading to your stop for the night in Barstow, California.
  • Dinner in Barstow.

Day 11: Barstow to Three Rivers, Claifornia via Tehachapi, Johnsondale, Springville and Yokohl Drive (275 miles / 465 kilometers / approximately 4.5 hours riding)

  • Today covers a lot of tight twisty’s so have your GoPro ready.
  • Be prepared to stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Enjoy some easy riding as you head towards Tehachapi before getting into some great mountain riding as you head up into the stunning Sierra Nevada’s!
  • This jewel of this tour puts you into some of the most beautiful riding of this trail.
  • Following well maintained Californian back roads bring you to your stop for the night in the quite mountain village of Three Rivers at the base of the Sequoia National Park.
  • Dinner in Three Rivers.

Day 12: Three Rivers - Rest day

  • This is your day, take care of laundry, catch up on organizing photos and notes, write some postcards to impress friends and family, do nothing or enjoy optional rides in the surrounding area.
  • Dinner in Three Rivers.

Day 13: Three Rivers to Visalia, California via Lodgepole, Cedar Grove and Pinehurst (170 miles / 285 kilometers / approximately 3.5 hours riding)

  • Another jewel in the crown day. Giant Sequoia’s, great roads, fantastic views, First Nation’s history, today is a short milage, but extremely full day.
  • Ride through Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. (park entrance fee included in your tour package)
  • You will need to have your GoPro ready.
  • Be prepared to stop along the way for photos and viewing the amazing scenery.
  • Cutting through well maintained Californian back roads puts you at your stop for the night in the small city of Visalia.
  • Dinner in Visalia.

Day 14: Visalia to Santa Barbara, California via Morro Bay and Lompoc (315 miles / 525 kilometers / approximately 5.5 hours riding)

  • Riding west across Californian’s San Joaquin Valley takes you to Californian’s rugged coast.
  • A stop to see the Sea Elephants and a chance to soak in the amazing scenery in San Simeon is a nice break before stopping for lunch.
  • A brief ride takes you south to Morro Bay for lunch on the waterfront.
  • Continuing South on California’s Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), you will experience firsthand what you have only read about.
  • You will end today in the seaside town of Santa Barbara.
  • Dinner in Santa Barbara.

Day 15: Santa Barbara to LA Hotel via Ojai, Santa Clarita, Pasadena and Redlands (185 miles / 315 kilometers / approximately 3.5 hours riding)

  • Head inland to visit the typical Californian town of Ojai (seen in several movies).
  • Leaving Ojai continue inland to swing around the cities of the LA Basin.
  • Following the highway, you will pass through some of the inland cities before arriving in Redlands to drop off your bike and start wrapping up this tour.
  • After handing your bike in and completing all the documentation, get picked up by shuttle for your ride to your stop for the night. (shuttle fee included in your tour package)
  • Dinner in LA area.

Day 16: LA Hotel to airport

  • After breakfast catch your shuttle to airport. (shuttle fee included in your tour package)
  • With prior notice, additional nights can be arranged, for you to explore the area.

Picking up your bike and leaving Chicago, you will ride key sections of the “Mother Road” through the rolling countryside of Illinois, through the rugged beauty of Texas and Arizona and the prairies of Oklahoma, giving you a close-up view of the amazing scenery.
