Roads in Morocco

Most roads between small towns and villages are paved. However, you will drive on dirt roads in some sections with lots of sand and dust. Also, roads going uphill to the mountain passes and downhill can have many turns, so, extreme cautions should be taken at all times. Desert dunes can also be very steep sometimes, so, enjoy yourself but also make a sensible judgment to avoid any unnecessary incidents at the same time.

Physical fitness

The Desert Wanderer requires all their tour participants to have generally good health, physical fitness, and alertness. Quad biking can be bumpy on some dirt road sections, so, they do not recommend anyone with back or spinal problems to participate.

Location

This tour will take place around Morocco. You will ride and explore various locations, from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou, Boumalne, Serdrare, Lmharche, Merzouga, Alnif, and Agdz.

Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It is a small Berber village with a fortified city along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Since its giant fortification is a great example of earthen clay architecture, it has also become a mega movie location since the 1960s.

Merzouga

Merzouga is a small town in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a 50-kilometer long and five-kilometer wide set of sand dunes that reach up to 350-meter high. Most people are here to take a camel safari into the dunes and to get a taste of remote Berber life. When a wealthy family refused hospitality to a poor woman and her son, God was offended and buried them under the mounds of sand called Erg Chebbi. So goes the legend of the dunes rising majestically above the twin villages of Merzouga and Hassi Labied.

Food

You will be served meals including food, water, coffee, or tea during the tour. The Desert Wanderer recommends you drink mineral water which can be purchased at many convenience stores on the road. All meals are prepared in a very clean and safe way in most restaurants and at your camps. You will enjoy traditional Moroccan food in most cases. Some restaurants do have a Western menu. However, they do not allow any alcohol until your driving is finished for the day.
