Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Sri Lanka

Upon arrival at the international airport north of Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, the participants will be escorted to a hotel in the small fishing town of Negombo, approximately 20 kilometers north of the airport. Negombo is known as “little Rome” because of its many churches and its catholic inhabitants.

Here, you will rest and enjoy a tranquil afternoon at the beach, by the poolside, or unwind at one of the many good restaurants and cafes in town. Early in the evening, all the participants will meet the motorcycle guide for a briefing and for the welcome dinner.

Day 2: The first day on the road, Negombo to Habarana, 170 kilometers / 106 miles

This is your first day of riding and you will take time out to get to know the motorbikes before you start riding towards the central part of the island. The way the traffic moves and the tropical scenery is unknown to first-time visitors, so you will do plenty of stops to enjoy the view of the paddy fields and plantations with coconut and banana palm trees. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at a hotel at Habarana and relax by the poolside or explore the local area.

Day 3: Towards the east coast of Sri Lanka, Habarana to Trincomalee, 120 kilometers / 74.5 miles

After breakfast, you will ride to the town of Trincomalee, located on the eastern coastline of Sri Lanka. Try your luck and spot a wild elephant on the road side as you ride along large water reservoirs and thick dense jungle. You will spend the night at a hotel near the beach just north of Trincomalee town and upon arrival at the hotel, one can enjoy a much-needed dip in the Indian Ocean.

Day 4: Southward bound, Trincomalee to Mahiyanganaya, 240 kilometers / 149 miles

You will ride south today until you reach the small town of Mahayanganaya which is surrounded by irrigated green rice paddies and palm trees. This area of Sri Lanka is populated by the indigenous people, the Veddah people.

Day 5: Exploring Mahiyanganaya

You will be spending 2 nights at your hotel in Mahiyanganaya and this day is dedicated to exploring the local area and get a glimpse of the old fashion farming life along the small and narrow country lanes. There will be plenty of chances for photographing, sampling local fruits, talking with local villagers, and tasting the local tea. In the afternoon, you'll visit a small tribal village where you will see how the indigenous people in Sri Lanka live.

Day 6: Mahiyangana to Knuckles, 80 kilometers / 50 miles

Ride through the tea plantations in the Central High Land. There will be an optional offroad riding in the Knuckles mountains. After you have left the hotel in Mahiyangaya, the road gets more and more winding as you approach the Knuckles Mountain Range and the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

The air gets cooler and after a few hours, the coconut and banana palm trees are replaced by green tea plantations, with tea bushes in straight lines. The landscape is dotted with Tamil Sri Lankans picking the bright green buds of the dark tea bushes. There is plenty of opportunities to stop to take pictures and enjoy the scenery.

Day 7: Towards the Royal City of Kandy, 75 kilometers / 47 miles

In the morning, you will enjoy the view of the mountains and the clouds rolling by before you get on to your motorcycles and ride to the next destination which is the charming Royal City of Kandy. Here lived the last of the Sri Lankan kings before the island was colonized, first by the Portuguese and later by the British. You will take a walk around the beautiful lakeside in the Kandy city where Buddhist temples are reflected in the lake.

Day 8: Winding mountain roads and magnificent vistas, Kandy to Haputale, 150 kilometers / 93 miles

The ride this day offers spectacular scenery in the Central Highlands. The winding road leads through miles of green tea plantations and some stretches of pine forest. You will pass old English “hill stations”, small towns in the cool hills where the British colonial administrations settled. You will end the tour in the small town of Haputale about 1100 meters above sea level.

Day 9: From the mountains to the jungle, Haputale to Tissamaharama, 140 kilometers / 87 miles

Your first stop this morning is a view point named Lipton’s Seat, 1950 meters above sea level, with a spectacular view of the plains below. From Haputale, you will start descending towards the plains at the southern coastline and on the way, you will pass by large waterfalls. At the end of the day, you will be riding through the jungle in Yala National Park where one might spot some of the wildlife.

Day 10: Jeep safari, Yala National Park to Mirissa Beach, 125 kilometers / 78 miles

Rise and shine for an early morning jeep safari at Yala National Park where you will look out for leopards, bears, and wild elephants while the sun rises above the jungle. After the safari, you will ride along the southern coastline to the small beach town of Mirissa, where you can enjoy a cocktail or a cold beer on the beach while watching the sunset.

Day 11: Mirissa Beach

This will be a well-earned day of rest at one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches, at the small town of Mirissa with optional whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, or surfing. There is also an option of riding to the old Dutch heritage fortress in the town of Galle and back. Galle is located about 35 kilometers west of Mirissa.

Day 12: From the coast to the hills, Mirissa Beach to Bopath Ella, 180 kilometers / 112 miles

You will have a scenic ride in front of you this day as you move from the coast to the hills through tea plantations and farmland. In the late afternoon, you'll arrive at the magnificent waterfall, Bopath Ella Fall, where you will spend the night at a hotel.

Day 13: Bopath Ella to Negombo, 120 kilometers / 74.5 miles

The ride starts in the hills but as you approach Negombo, the landscape becomes plainer. Upon arrival at your hotel, you will meet up for a farewell dinner and toast to a great motorcycle journey through Sri Lanka.

Day 14: Farewell

Breakfast is served at the hotel. Please remember to check out from the room no later than 12:00 on this day. Afterward, you will depart for the international airport.
