In 2012, USA on Wheels embarked on a jubilee tour of America. A large group of people came together and it was a great success. For this reason, USA on Wheels has decided to make it one of the offered tours. This tour commences on a Saturday and offers lots of fun socializing during real American-style barbecues. The tour will take you from Los Angeles, California, all the way east to El Paso, Texas. You will face temperatures ranging between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, chilled-out and desolate roads, deserts, typical cowboy towns, airplane graveyards, and the opportunity to visit the world’s biggest Harley dealer, Barnett.
During your journey, you will stay in good quality hotels, which will be reserved before departure. The room will be in a standard twin / double room accommodation. You can opt for a private room for an additional single supplement. All rooms will include en-suite bathroom with shower or bath facilities, television, and air conditioning. Most hotels will also have a pool.
Upon arrival at the airport hotel, there will be time for a short introduction to the tour and a welcoming drink.
The following morning, you will pick up the motorbikes from the rental place and leave Los Angeles southbound via the interstate. Passing Oceanside, you will head inland towards Julian, following the enticing curves and bends of the Sweeney Pass Road. You will stay the night in El Centro, which lies between the fields of Imperial Valley.
From here, the tour takes you east towards Arizona with a stop at the Imperial Dam on the way, followed by more country roads and acres of farmland. For the last stretch of today you will take Interstate 8 arriving at Gila Bend, which is known for its roadside culture and is named after the sharp bends in the Gila River.
Today will start and finish with a ride through a park that is home to interesting cacti, Sonora Desert, and Saguaro National Park West. You will also take the scenic route to Tucson via the US-89, “The West’s Most Western Highway.” Tucson’s nickname is “The Old Pueblo,” a very old city, which was founded by Native Indians.
Today you are free to explore Tucson. You will have the opportunity to visit the Old Tucson Studios, with its Western interior, and the Pima Air and Space Museum, with its enormous aeroplane graveyard, called “The Boneyard.” There is also the chance to take a trip to Mount Lemmon for those of you seeking something else to do.
An early start to the day will take you via a long, but ever-changing route to Silver City. This route will also take you past Tombstone, which looks like a typical old Western town where cowboys used to reign the streets on horseback. You will also visit the town of Bisbee and get a taster of the mining industry. Today will take you to the southernmost point of your trip, spending the night in the state of New Mexico.
Via the bendy US-152, you head towards Hillsboro and carry on along the Rio Grande to Hatch. Through Franklin Mountains State Park you will enter Texas and continue on to El Paso. There will be a quick stop at the Harley dealership to buy souvenirs before carrying on to the hotel for the night.
The route takes you further along wide, open terrain to Guadalupe. The famous El Capitan rock formation is certainly worth getting the cameras out for. The next Kodak moment will find you at the caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. A visit to see the impressive stalagmites in the caves is one of your opportunities to explore the area.
After an hour on the road you will start following the scenic US-82 westbound. Along the way, you will come across the White Sands vista point with a stunning view over its vast surroundings.
Heading north along the continuous road, you will get to enjoy the scenic US-78 back towards the state of Arizona.
On the program, today is a short ride past Coolidge Dam. You will spend the night in Arizona’s capital, one of America’s biggest cities by landmass, Phoenix. This is a sunny city and the hottest in comparison to America’s other big cities. Despite it only being spring at this time, it will feel like summer.
Today will be a day of rest and you will have the opportunity to visit Phoenix. A trip to South Mountain Park will also be possible.
Leaving the city behind, you will ride on via country roads going west into California. Along the way, the landscape will change from outstretched desert to vast cattle fields, grain and grass belonging to massive farms as far as the eye can see.
From Brawley, an agricultural city, the route will take you through Anya-Borrega Desert State Park and along the bendy US-79 to Los Angeles. The last part of the journey will take you along a motorway to the rental place to return your motorbikes. A drink at the airport hotel will see an end to this splendid trip.
With an early start to the day, you will take the hotel shuttle to the airport and catch your flight back. Or, in case you would like to extend your visit, USA on Wheels is happy to accommodate your additional wishes.
Please note that the pace of the tour can be at a beginner's level as well as at an intermediate's level. It all depends on the group's experience and own pace. Please send an inquiry for more details.
This journey will take you to Los Angeles, El Centro, Gila Bend, Tucson, Silver City, El Paso, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Safford, Phoenix, and Brawley.
