Program

Day 1: Guwahati

You should plan to arrive at Guwahati by late afternoon. The Viktorianz Bespoke Adventure Travels team will receive and transfer you from the airport / railway station to your hotel where you will be accorded a traditional Ahomi welcome.

Later in the afternoon, Viktorianz Bespoke Adventure Travels recommends a darshan (auspicious visit) of the Maa Kamakhya Temple. Kamakhya Dhaam is dedicated to the Mother Goddess Kamakhya and is considered the most sacred and oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas on Earth.

In the evening, the tour leader will brief you on the ride. You will also familiarise yourself with the bikes that would be your partner for the next two weeks or so. You will then enjoy a fine dining experience with traditional Ahomi cuisine.

Day 2: Kaziranga

After breakfast, you will line up for a photograph with your bikes. This is the traditional Viktorianz way of commencing the ride every morning. A quick brief for the day’s ride and wheels roll. You will ride out of Guwahati to Kaziranga along the scenic Asian Highway-1. This nearly 200-kilometer ride will take you four hrs of saddle time. A quick lunch at the resort and you will be off to a Jeep safari.

Kaziranga National Park, a world heritage site, is home to nearly two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinoceros. The park has the highest density of tigers among the protected areas in the world and was declared a tiger reserve in 2006.

Although the sighting of tigers is difficult because of the tall grasses that provide excellent camouflage, their presence can be felt everywhere by way of pug marks, kills, and territorial markings. You will also see large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer.

After resting at the resort, in the evening you will be entertained by tribal dances and music by a cultural troupe. If you are keen, the next morning you could do an optional elephant safari which starts at 6:30 a.m. This will have to be booked beforehand and there are no guarantees.

Day 3 and 4: Majuli Island

After tea and cookies, you are off to the park, where the elephant safari awaits you. You will proceed for an hour and a half trying to get sightings of the elephants and rhinos. The view of the park, the river at sunrise is ethereal. Also, this safari provides excellent opportunities for out-of-the-world wildlife photography, so keep your cameras, lenses, and gear handy.

You get back for a piping hot breakfast. You then load up and line up for the short ride of three hours to Jorhat. A quick lunch at the hotel and you set out for Majuli.

With all of its 452 sq km, Majuli Island is the world’s largest freshwater island. Amidst the mighty Brahmaputra River’s ochre sandbanks, Majuli is hauntingly scenic and beautiful with a tapestry of green rice fields and purple meadows of hyacinth blossoms. You would spend two nights and a full day on this unique river island.

The island is home to nearly 100 species of birds and also people of neo-Vaishnavite philosophy. Viktorianz advises you to get here as soon as possible. Surveys indicate that at current levels of erosion the island will cease to exist within the next two decades.

Day 5: Mukokchung

After breakfast, today you ride into Nagaland. The five-hour ride of 135 kilometers to Mokochung will be over majestic high mountains of the Naga Hills, through deep gorges and lush green valleys. You will cross twisting streams and see the exotic flora of this beautiful land.

Nagaland is inhabited by 16 major tribes, each distinct in character from the other in terms of customs, language and dress.

Mokokchung is an important cultural center and is home to the Ao tribe, and is particularly noted for its unique tradition of celebrating Christmas and New Year in the main town square. You will love riding along the village roads that have been cleaned and decorated for Christmas.

Day 6 & 7: Kohima

Riders! For the next two days (this would be three days if combined with Hornbill Festival) be prepared to be enthralled by an explosion of culture, dance, music, art, cuisine and so much more. You ride today to Kohima for the Hornbill festival. You aim to cover the 150 kilometers in five hours. You will stop for lunch en route.

You will learn during your time at the festival about this land of folklore passed down the generations through word of mouth.

You will spend most of each day at The Heritage Complex at Kisama which is a cluster of sixteen houses of each tribe called "Morung or Youth Dormitory". Each tribe is distinguished by the colorful and intricately designed costumes, jewelry and beads that they adorn.

The traditional ceremonial attire of each tribe is an awe-inspiring sight to behold; the multi-colored spears and dao (machetes) decorated with dyed goat’s hair, the headgear made of finely woven bamboo interlaced with orchid stems, adorned with boar's teeth and hornbill's feathers, elephant tusk armlets.

There is a bewildering variety of food; smoked or grilled to perfection, pork, chicken, beef, fish, leafy vegetable stews, and sauces and currries. For the adventurous, there are insects and worms! All of it served with delicious sticky rice. The odd place also serves north Indian dishes, albeit a very limited choice. Every night, there is an ongoing Rock Festival at the nearby IG Stadium. Top bands from Nagaland and the rest of India perform.

Day 8: Dimapur

In the late morning, you ride back 80 kilometers today to Dimapur. This is a rough road under construction - and if it rains, it may take more time. Dimapur was the ancient capital of the Kachchari Kingdom. The ruins of the ancient city are worth a visit to the discerning architecture enthusiast. A visit to the Chumukedima Village and the Diezephe Craft village are also recommended.

Day 9: Shillong

Today, you will start early after breakfast. You have a long ride of 350 kilometers on mostly good roads that we plan to complete in 9-10 hours of saddle time.

It is now the Meghalaya’s turn to enchant you with its hills and valleys. You will enter Shillong, the Scotland of the East before dark. The city has a good nightlife with delightful eating places and rock bars and cafes. Explore and enjoy it!

Day 10: Shillong

You ride early today to see the Living Root Bridge near Mawlynnong village. Renowned for being declared the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong is located near the Bangladesh border, around three hours from Shillong. The pristine and unbelievably clean waters of Umngot River will fascinate you. You ride for another three hours to Dawki for a boat ride on this amazingly clean river.

On the way back, you will see Elephanta Falls and stopover at ML05, a Rock & Bike Café. You must dine at any one of the local eating places at Shillong.

Day 11: Guwahati and fly out

This is the day you would ride in the morning from Shillong to Guwahati. This is the end of ride, and you deposit your bikes. You bid farewell to North East, as you fly out in the afternoon or evening.
