At Wild Gros Morne, they do things a little different. They are always thinking outside the box, taking a creative approach to how they design their offerings. Life can be hectic and they understand the importance of getting away from it all to refresh and reconnect with the things that truly matter. With this in mind, they have developed a unique off grid backcountry cabin experience that immerses their guests in a breathtaking mountain environment while encouraging a sense of true wilderness adventure or quiet unplugged relaxation.

Their cabins, aptly named The Sinkhole Lodge and The Black Spruce Inn, are located high in the Long Range Mountains at the terminus of the tree line on a remote glacier carved pond.

The Sinkhole Lodge is the perfect base camp for your backcountry adventures. On the cabin's main level is a large bedroom with room to store your personal gear, and two adult-sized bunk beds complete with cozy down duvets that can sleep four adults quite comfortably. It boasts an open concept living room and full kitchen comes equipped with everything you need to prepare a hearty meal. A propane range, fridge, wood stove, and table with bench seating can easily seat six adults. A half bath with vanity, storage and flush toilet round out the main level. Upstairs is a warm rustic open loft equipped with a double bed, and hands down one of the best mountain views on the island.

Wild Gros Morne backcountry cabin experience:

  • The wood stove will be lit and the cabin warmed up prior to your arrival (wood is provided for the weekend)
  • Water will be collected from the local spring and stored in the cabin (you will also be shown to the water source in case you do need more)
  • Cell reception is weak and intermittent at the cabin so your guide will also show you areas close by with more dependable service should an emergency arise
  • The cabin comes outfitted with beds, clean linens, a full kitchen with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and indoor bathroom with flushable toilet. There is also a great selection of board games and books should the weather keep you stormbound for a day or two
  • One tank of fuel for the generator will be provided. You are suggested to only turning on the generator in the night, or if you need a quick bit of power during the day. Turn off the generator before bed and one tank of gas in the efficient Honda generator can provide two to three nights electricity when used conservatively. Guests will be responsible for any additional fuel needed

Program

At Wild Gros Morne, they listen to their guests. They know you work hard and you deserve to play hard as well. They have combined two of their most popular winter tours, their Experience Snowmobiling and their Off Grid Backcountry Cabin with a collection of custom adventures into one premium multiday backcountry experience. Enjoy the vast wilderness and pristine environment as you explore some of the finest snowmobiling routes Newfoundland has to offer.

Suggested equipment

Snowmobiling is a great way to enjoy winter but it can get chilly. You will be out all day riding in many exposed areas and appropriate warm and waterproof clothing suitable for this cold weather activity is highly recommended. Wild Gros Morne snowmobile tours will take you through many remote areas of Western Newfoundland where there is little to no cell phone reception. Be sure to have any personal and medical items needed. If you are still unfamiliar, unsure or have any questions about what you might need feel free to contact them anytime for a more detailed equipment list.

Please also note the weather conditions in this area can change rapidly and although very unlikely, you may not be able to make it to all destinations. Guests should check the weather and plan accordingly.
