Day 1: Hanoi – Vu Linh (180 kilometers / 112 miles – 6 hours)

In the morning, you will spend 30 minutes for the guide to do a briefing about the trip and show you how to ride in Vietnam. You will also use that time to get used to the bike before you start the trip to Thac Ba Lake which has an area of 23,000 hectares and over 1,300 islands and hills with diverse ecological environments.

You will arrive in Vu Linh, an ethnic village of the Dao minority by the side of the lake. That will give you time to do a leisure walk and explore the beautiful village, its people, and their lives. Lunch and dinner will be provided throughout the day.

At night, the welcome is exceptional with a lot of local rice-wine from the hosts. It is surely one of the highlights of the trip. You will spend the night in a homestay.

Day 2: Vu Linh – Ha Giang (180 kilometers / 112 miles)

After breakfast, you will ride along the Thac Ba Lake on a small road lined by palm trees and scenic mountain views to join National Road No. 2 heading up to Ha Giang where you will stop for the night.

Before getting to the Tay village where you will have a homestay, you will stop at Ha Giang City to ask a permit for the motorbike tour to the Dong Van Rock Plateau and frontier area in following days. Eating dinner and sleeping in a stilt house in the Thon Tha community-based tourism village will be a refreshing experience. It is the village of the Tay ethnic people.

Day 3: Ha Giang – Đồng Văn (160 kilometers / 99 miles)

Leaving Ha Giang, the road climbs over the Quan Ba pass or Heaven’s Gate. The road winds over a saddle and opens up on to an awesome vista. You will ride along Yen Minh, through the pine forest. The journey is worth stopping for drinks and lunch. You will then drive past Pho Bang Town, the quiet and secret Phố Cáo, Sủng Là or the village of H’Mong people.

They are located in the middle of rocky mountains. With deep colors, the houses are solid, old, and traditional. It will be once again, a very enjoyable ride. You will see amazing mountain views of the rock plateau. If you drive in the spring, the land will be bright with pink trees as the traditional flower blooms during the Tet holiday in Vietnam.

If you travel in autumn, you will be surprised by the beauty of the local buckwheat flower. You will also stop and visit the infamous Vuong Palace. The Vuong family was considered the King of the Hmong people in Dong Van, Ha Giang. Their residence was built in the scenic valley of Sa Phin with Chinese architecture.

The whole house was built out of wood and rock only. The rocks for the buildings were imported from China. The Vuong family residence is a masterpiece of man’s work in Sa Phin’s valley of heavenly beauty. Enjoy coffee and stay overnight in Dong Van Old Quarter.

Day 4: Dong Van –Meo Vac – Bao Lac (110 kilometers / 68 miles)

After breakfast, you will leave for Lung Cu Flag Tower at around 08:00 a.m. It will be another amazing ride. Lung Cu Flag Tower is about 25 kilometers from the center of Dong Van District. The Lung Cu mount is said to be “a high forehead of the motherland” where it marks the extreme north of Vietnam.

From its top, visitors can see the whole of the beautiful and spectacular landscape. While in Lung Cu, you also can leave the bikes and walk to visit a small village around the area. Turn back to Dong Van, then you will drive to the peak of Ma Pi Leng which gives stunning views of the mountains and sweeping valleys.

It is the gateway to the best road trip in Vietnam. It has 22 kilometers of road that snakes its way along the mountainside to Meo Vac. The road has been cut into the side of the cliff face and far below are the distant waters of Nho Que River. Towering above is the rock face of the mighty gorge.

In the afternoon, you will motorcycle downhill along the river and see the different mountain views where it is less rocky and more filled with greens. Local breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served throughout the day. You will stay overnight in Bao Lac.

Day 5: Bao Lac – Cao Bang City (130 kilometers / 81 miles)

You will have a beautiful motor ride down to Cao Bang Province. There are a few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but there are many blind curves. You can stop often for photos in Nguyen Binh and Tinh Tuc.

Cao Bằng has several points of historical interest as well as many natural features such as the Pac Bo at the mouth of the confluence of two rivers, the Bằng Giang and Hien rivers where Hồ Chí Minh, in January 1941, established a revolutionary force in Cốc Bó Cave.

You will also find the Mạc King’s and Kỳ Sầm Temple, Coi Bin Church, the Bản Giốc Waterfall area in the international border between Vietnam and China, and the Thang Hen Mountain Lake. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served throughout the day. You will be staying in a good hotel in Cao Bang Town where you can relax to get ready for the next day.

Day 6: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Cao Bang

After breakfast, you will depart for Trung Khanh which lies on the border with China. There, you will have the chance to meet the Nung people in the village of Phuoc Sen, a mountainous village famous for its traditional blacksmith craft. The farming tools made there are an integral part of their lifestyle which is evident in the surrounding rice paddies and fields.

Nestled among the amazing landscape is the breathtaking Ban Gioc Waterfall which spans over 300 meters, half in Vietnam and half in China. You will have time to soak up the powerful atmosphere of the falls and take some fantastic photos before heading to another natural wonder, the Nguom Ngao Cave.

The cave stretches out 2,144 meters underground and is brimming with incredible stalactites and stalagmites. You will then make your way to return Cao Bang town. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served throughout the day.

As you float on Ba Be Lake, you can take in the scenery of the surrounding karsts decorated with patches of wild vegetation and inhabited by all sorts of interesting creatures.

Enjoy a boat ride along the Nang River with time to explore the stunning Ba Be Lake and the caves of Puong Grotto where you can explore the stalactites and stalagmites which are a result of the erosion of the river on the karst. Look out for the bat colony, a several thousand strong.

You will later arrive in Pac Ngoi village, a community-based tourism village of the Tay people in Ba Be Lake’s side. At the homestay, you can relax and unwind from the day and enjoy a meal of home cooked local food. Lunch will also be served throughout the day.
