During this tour, you will be staying at several different accommodations. You will spend three or four nights at a family's home and three or four nights at a hotel. The homestays are hosted by ethnic people in a traditional stilt house (Tay, Dao, Thai, Mong). For the rest of the tour, you will be staying at several local hotels.

Although Vietnam is a developing country and you will visit some remote places, the quality of accommodation has improved greatly. In small towns, you will be staying at local private guest houses. The rooms are based on twin shared and are provided with air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, and mosquito nets on each bed.

In some locations, the local home stays are available and the sleeping arrangements are made usually in a house on stilts, all in one room. Each person will have a mattress, a pillow, and mosquito nets, and will be sharing a toilet or shower.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi - Ba Bể Lake, 240 kilometers / 150 miles

Morning: Pick-up at your hotel at 7 AM, then depart to Thai Nguyen province. Have lunch at Thai Nguyen.

The afternoon is the time for enjoying great fun of motorbike touring on the winding roads, mountain passes crossing some hill tribe’s villages

At the end of the day, we arrive in Pac Ngoi village – a community consisting of Tay people on the side of Ba Be Lake. If you like to swimming or kayaking, we can arrange 1-2hrs for these activities.

At the homestay, you can relax and unwind from the day and enjoy a meal of home cooked local food.

Day 2: Ba Bể Lake - Bảo Lạc, 145 kilometers / 91 miles

Morning: After breakfast with the Tay family, we take a short walk to the Babe lake pier to start the 2 hour boat cruise around the largest natural lake in Vietnam – Ba Be lake.

Ba Bể Lake (Vietnamese: Ba means “Three”, Bể is from the Tay language word pé, meaning “lake”) is the largest natural lake in Vietnam. Ba Bể Lake is a featured geographical science and is a biodiversity reservoir. It is a part of the Ba Be National Park. It is home to a range of animals and plants.

You can relax on board a boat, do some wildlife spotting or if you need to cool off, you can jump into the cool, clean waters for a refreshing swim! As you float in Ba Be Lake, you can take in the scenery of the surrounding karsts decorated with patches of wild vegetation and inhabited by all sorts of interesting creatures. Trekking a little bit through the jungle, to reach Dau Dang waterfall – the fresh air and green life of jungle.

Afternoon: After lunch at Ba Be, we will continue run to Bao Lac, Cao Bang. Today is exactly the best offroad Vietnam motorbike tour. To reach Bao Lac, we follow the local path, less traffic, ride through the narrow and bumpy road with a breathtaking view on peak mountain, forest and ethnic villages.

Arrive Bao Lac town in Cao Bang province in late afternoon. Sleep in hotel.

Day 3: Bảo Lạc - Mèo Vạc - Đồng Văn, 90 kilometers / 56 miles

Leave Bao Lac, we continue to run to Meo Vac – one part of Dong Van Karst Plateau GeoPark, where have the amazing karst.

If you don’t want much dangerous, we will arrange around 2 hours for motorbike, trekking down and boating or Kayaking time on Nho Que river before continue the trip to Ma Pi Leng pass.

  • Terrain: ~70% asphalt, 30% concrete and a little bit offroad.

If you like offroad and challenging your driving skill, and using offroad bike, we will arrange the road travel down to Nho Que river ( following the road from Khau Vai ( Meo Vac) – Bao Lac). The road leads you through the muddy trail, local path, cross the river by bamboo raft.

  • Terrain: 30% concrete road, 70% offroad.

From Meo Vac, drive to the peak of Ma Pi Leng which gives stunning views of the mountains and sweeping valleys. This path winds for 22km to Meo Vac, which is the main attraction. Experience a riding through a gigantic maze of limestone peaks, stone forests, and rural Hmong villages in the valley. You will be impressed by the immense beauty of the karst mountain that surrounds you and the hard life of locals here. Visit some Hmong homes, try their food and wine, and you will be welcomed by the locals.

Day 4: Đồng Văn - Lung Cu - Ha Giang, 145 kilometers / 91 miles

After breakfast, we spent the time to explore Ma Pi Leng which gives stunning views of the mountains and sweeping valleys. It’s the most beautiful part of the whole journey, located on the Happiness road connecting the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac, Ma Pi Leng Pass. The legendary pass is well known for craggy cliffs and breath-taking views. It is the most ragged pass in the north, often referred to as the “king” of the passes in Vietnam! The whole road is winding through the cliffs and overcomes Ma Pi Leng pass at an altitude of 2,000 meters.

Leave Ma Pi Leng pass, come back to Ha Giang, through the winding mountain road, beside the Karst Mountain. You are expected to arrive at Ha Giang around 17:00.

Overnight in a homestay at a village near Ha Giang or hotel in the city.

Day 5: Ha Giang - Hoang Su Phi - Sin Man - Bac ha, 220 kilometers / 137 miles

Today, you head straight towards the north-western mountain. The road continues to be challenging with many curve winding road, but the good view of the mountain, rice fields between lovely villages of the hill tribes.

You will be able to know different ethnic people like Nung, flower Hmong, Tay, and Dao to name a few. You can explore their culture and real life. You'll ride from Ha Giang to Hoang Su Phi, Sin man to Bac Ha.

Day 6: Bac Ha - Sapa

If it’s Sunday, you can have the chance to enjoy the unique and special local Market in Bac Ha, it only happens on Sunday and be called SUNDAY MARKET. There are very colorful and various culture of ethnic minorities, it will be a special experience for you.

You will have a full day to discover the beauty of Sapa. This small town is covered by fog through the year and have a special weather in North Vietnam.

In the morning, you’ll start the motorbike tour by riding your motorbikes down the valley to visit Lao Chai village of the black H’Mong people. Experience the richest traditional culture of black H’Mong people in the region. Then, continue riding a bit to visit the Zay minority at Ta Van. Spend time to enjoy the picturesque scenery along the way, a mountainous area of stunning natural beauty, and diverse ethnic minorities.

You will keep on riding down the hill and enjoy the fantastic open views in Ban Ho, which is the most beautiful valley in which you spent a night on the bamboo house of Tay people. The rest of time, you’ll take a short walk to the nearby waterfall for sightseeing and experience the daily activities of the locals. Hotel stay in Ban Ho village.

Day 7: Sa Pa - Mù Cang Chải, 150 kilometers / 94 miles

Pass over Ô Quy Hồ pass (one of the 4 greatest passes in Vietnam). Ride on Ô Quy Hồ pass to cross Hoàng Liên mountain range, the highest one in Vietnam including Fansipan peak with the height of 3,142 meters above sea level. You will have pictures of the most beautiful valley in North Vietnam.

You will drive to Ban Thai village, the village of White Thai people, and one of the families here will be your host today. On your leisure time, you may stroll around this village to see the normal life of villagers. Have dinner and stay with the family.

Day 8: Mù Cang Chải - Nghĩa Lộ, 100 kilometers / 63 miles

Ride the motorbike around the Mong village with its beautiful rice terraces such as La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, etc. or visit some school and get along with the children at the school.

In La Pan Tan terraces, you should deeply go into La Pan Tan area. On the route, there’s a small trail run along the valley, turn into that trail and go more deeply where you can take extreme and unique photos.

Besides the rice terrace, you will have a chance to explore the culture and local life of Mong people, such as traditional music and agricultural tools. Then, you continue to ride over the Khau Phạ Pass which is one of the four greatest passes in northern Vietnam with 40-kilometer patches of fog in the cold days.

The ride will be on some of the most scenic roads which offer a lot of stops to take pictures. You’ll cross Tu Le and Mu Cang Chai, the two remote lands of Yen Bai province where the black H’mong, Dzao, and Thai people can make wonderful rice terrace on the mountains.

Day 9: Nghĩa Lộ - Hanoi, 220 kilometers / 137 miles

After breakfast, you will drive from Nghĩa Lộ to Hanoi on a full day. You are expected to arrive at Hanoi at 17:00-18:00. Return the rental bike and say goodbye at your hotel. The North Vietnam motorbike tour reach the end at this point.
